fuel sending unit removal

Got a small fuel leak I think is coming from the sending unit on my '69 Cutlass. Quick question before I drop the tank. The chassis manual shows a special tool to remove the sending unit - is it required or can something more common be used?

There's usually a lock ring. You can loosen it by tapping on the tabs with the end of a screwdriver.

Yes but sometimes they are stuck/rusted so some WD40 or the like may be needed.

I just changed my sending unit a few months ago. A rubber mallet and a screwdriver should unleash the locking ring unless it is rusted.

I bought the Spectra unit with return line cheap off Amazon with free shipping and have no complaints.

With the tank dropped, it is a good opportunity to add a tank pad from 70POST, a fellow Austinite on this board. It fits great and seems well constructed.

Also see if you need to add the small plastic gas tank vent on the front passenger side of the tank. Mine was missing and vents capped off.

Thanks for all the advice and glad to hear the screwdriver/mallet method will work. Just wanted to avoid getting knee deep in the project only to find a special tool is required to finish the job. Been there, done that....
