fuel pump?

took the 442 for a ride today and she started off running fine. Half way through the ride she felt like she was surging upon acceleration. stumbled and sounded like a cough when I took off from a stop. When I was running 45 she even felt like she was surging. Any body know where to start my trouble shooting?

There are lots of possibilities. It does sound like it's fuel related. Do a pressure and volume check of the fuel pump at the carburetor. That should tell you if the carburetor is getting what it needs. If that's O.K. then you might want to investigate the carburetor itself. You'll have to start with the most likely items and verify each until you get to the problem.

And don't forget the fuel hoses, which can do this if they're badly cracked (usually the first sign will be hard starting after sitting a few days) and the fuel pickup sock, which can cause similar symptoms if it's deteriorated and crud in the tank is intermittently blocking the end of the tube.

A quick easy check on the fuel pump can be done by undoing the fuel line at the carb and putting it in to a Coke bottle unhook the coil and turn the engine over for about 8-10 seconds. If the pump is good it should fill the 16 oz bottle to about 1/2 full. Not a definitive test but will give you a idea if you have problems in that area....Tedd

That's awesome advice! Sorry to hijack the thread, but I'm going to try that!

no idea, had a back-up carb and threw it on. I will rebuild the bad one for back-up.
