Front air deflector......

Front air deflector......

Hi everybody, what is the exact purpose of the front air deflector,

For protection or cooling or ?? And if you ride without it ?

It's for both protection and cooling. If your cooling system is in good order you can drive without it though.

Thank you for the comment. Actually the cooling system is not uptimum, so may be I'll put one on with the rest of the cooling upgrades.

The Olds boys did a pretty nice job engineering how to maximize airflow through the radiator and minimize losses. In addition to the shield sealing the bottom of the front bumper, there should also be the mastic rubber seals on either side of the radiator. All of these combine to minimize air escaping around the radiator.

It's not for protection, just for air flow direction. There's a reason the frame protects the oil pan; that's the protection part.

yes I will also put the seal on the side of the rad and on top and bottom also

Oldsmobile didn’t add parts to these cars unless it was absolutely necessary. Even if a single part only adds a penny to the overall cost, multiply that penny by a few million cars and it quickly adds up to real money. And if be willing to be that air damn costs more than a penny to manufacture.

its kinda like an airplane wing, it creates a low pressure area behind the radiator to encourage airflow at highways speeds.
