Floor shift stuck in park

My 69 shifter is stuck in park. It has happened before, but went back to normal, but now it is stuck again.. I can shift the gears on the transmission from underneath by hand. . Any idea of the problem. The floor shifter isn't original to the car ,I don't believe, as PRNDL is above the steering column Any idea of what I need to do. The weather is improving and I need to hit the road Thanks

You could remove the console to watch the shifter to see if it moves when you pull up on the T. Another thought might be to remove the cable from the transmission to isolate it in the shifter or something else. Since you don't think its original, does it have the backdrive linkage on it? If so, is that moving smoothly? Do you have a chassis service manual or assembly manual to verify the conversion was done correctly and all the right parts are there?

If you disconnect the cable from the transmission, will the shifter move? The cable is where I would start my inspection.

Also check your ground strap. I had a cable weld itself together when the ground strap rusted out

Rock the car back and forth on its wheels while someone puts enough force to shift normally on the shifter.

Thanks for the replies. It doesn't have back drive linkage. Anyway I was checking the shifter through the gap in the slot to see if t piece was going down far enough when the ball was pushed down. Looked OK. Finally got my fat self under the car to recheck the cable where it was connected to the transmission. Looked OK.

I thought to try to trace the cable back up to the shifter, I couldn't see what I was doing, but I pushed and prodded the cable. When I got towards the shifter I felt that the cable relax or move in some way or form. I tried to move the shifter and all was good.

Not sure what or why it was hanging up there. I have to take the car into the mechanic for some work shortly, so I'll explore it better when the car is on the rack.
