Thumbs up First time rebuilding a 455 Olds engine

I bought my 1935 Olds last month. Since that time I have been plugging away at taking apart the engine to rebuild it. This is my first time actually breaking down an engine and rebuilding it. I have done repairs before, valve cover gaskets, oil changes, brakes, exhaust, drop transmissions and replacing it. etc.. Never anything like this though. I am very excited doing this. I must admit that I was getting frustrated when I couldn't undo the transmission, as I was taking the engine and trans out as one. When the car was painted they dipped the car body off the frame. Thus, they had it all together and just lowered the body back on. After two days I finally got the engines and transmission out. I was so happy and relieved that, as some people do, men and women, I cried my HAPPY tears. Afterwards, I held my arms up as If I won a race and said YES. Tomorrow I start tearing down the engine, disconnect the transmission from the engine and moving on with my rebuild. Working on cars are SO awesome. LOL.

Congrats on your score, make sure you read some post here about rebuild of a Olds block, its not a standard rebuild like a cheby.

Thank you. I have looked on here for help and such that others have asked. I am putting in a 700r4 transmission, so I have overdrive with the 455 Olds. I presently have a 400 transmission, with the 455 engine. I only get 10mpg. with it. I found out, on here, about the adapter needed for the engine and trans match up. I ordered it and should be here today. I bought it from Jegs, as that is what someone else, on here, was doing.

Do you know if a block from a 425 Olds. is the same as a 455 Olds.? I want to make a 455 engine from a 425 block. This way I don't have to have the block bored from the 455, I just took out. Thanks.

Hi, sounds like a great project
http://tech.classicoldsmobile.com/107.shtml
you should find the answer to your question here in the tech section...just follow the link above. But basically you can make a 455 engine from a 425 block you might just need a different cam and lifters!

Can anyone tell me how to get the bolts out to get the flywheel off?

Welcome to CO
I have been very impressed with the knowledge and help that the members have provided great group of people.
I used a Craftsman hand held 19.4 volt 1/2 drive torque gun to remove the the flywheel bolts.

Impact wrench is pretty effective

locking the crankshaft and using hand tools also works.

If you do not have an electric or air powered impact, this is a great time to justify that cost.

Wait until you get to the front crank bolt.

Flywheel bolts

I finally got the bolts off, I had to cut them off. The person who had the car, before myself, put two washers on the end of the bolts, then the nuts and that made it impossible to get a socket, let alone any kind of impact gun, on it. No damage was done to the flywheel or the torque converter. All is good with it. I proceed to take out the pistons, crankshaft, camshaft, and such in the morning.

Once the three converter screws are removed with an open-end or ring wrench (they are not very high torque), and the engine is removed from the car (or the transmission is removed), you have a clear shot directly to the six flywheel bolts, with any kind of wrench or gun you want, and they generally just wing off.

These bolts are designed to fit snugly into the flexplate or flywheel, and any sort of washers in this location would frankly be dangerous.

Any way you could post a photo?

May I ask why a rebuild ? Or is it just to see what you have ?

I am doing the rebuild because the person I bought the car off of had water in the number eight cylinder. So, I had a spare engine 425, with the same block, and I wanted to switch blocks. He didn't tell me, which I found out yesterday, that the 425 engine was bored. My pistons won't fit in the other block. Now I am back to boring the original block and getting 20 over pistons. Ugh.

MDchanic,

Do you want a picture of the engine or the car itself?

My 1935 Olds.

I have been working on my rebuild of my 1935 Olds 455 motor. It has been a learning experience that I have enjoyed. I bought new rings, new bearings, new alternator (chrome), and a chrome ac compressor (does not have heat nor ac). I had a valve job done. It has racing springs in it, a racing cam, and the main is .010 under and the rods and also .010 under. The pistons are .020 over, thus if my calculations are correct the 425 is now about a 440. The 455 that I was going to do turned into too many things wrong with the parts, thus I could not just change everything over from the bad block to 425 block. In this situation (or any other, in life…you punt. lol) so I made the 425 to about a 440. I am ordering my 700r4 transmission next week, so I have overdrive. I'll either shorten the driveshaft or if they make one the size that I will now need, just buy a new one. I have it all together, except the rocker arms, push rods, and the intake manifold. I bought a new aluminum Edelbrock Performer intake manifold, from Summit. found a crack in the 455 one. Then it will just be putting the icing on top…carb., alt., power steering box, etc.. Put the trans and motor together and get it in the car. Then it is time for the interior work.
