Filled tank with good ole 92 octane leaded fuel

Last week I took my 64 88 on a 600 mile road trip to drive in a parade. While I was waiting for the parade to start I struck up a conversation with a gentleman on a 1952 john deere tractor. We began to discuss leaded fuel and he said when you get to the end of the parade let's talk about putting some "real fuel in my tank'.
To the point. I purchased a tank full of 92 octane leaded fuel from the generous farmer. He told me he runs his 30 year old combines with the stuff.
His farm also had standard leaded fuel stored in huge tanks on his farm.
The ride home was uneventful but it occurred to me that 3/4 of the way home (when I was preparing to make a fuel stop) I had more gas remaining then anticipated. In the end the car was quicker when passing slower traffic and added about @ 2 miles per gallon on the ride home.
Same traffic, same route, same cool morning weather and same travel time.
Bottom line the old car loved the fuel and the cost to me was the same as 92 unleaded. Results 89 unleaded fuel on the way to the parade @ 11 8 MPG.
Results 92 leaded fuel on the way home 13.1 MPG. The car was great the whloe trip

Was the increase in milage due to the lead or the lack of methanol?
Something how the government pushed the methanol but lets makers report milage on fuel without it.

It's a proven fact that ethanol gas gets 10% less fuel economy than the ol non-ethanol.

My wife's '06 Buick Lucerne with the Northstar gets 19 mpg on highway running premium unleaded with ethanol. When we travel to Midland and get past Abilene, I can buy gas without ethanol. The mileage jumps up to over 25 mpg. Try telling that to a politician and see how far it gets.

It's the lack of ethanol (not methanol).

Yes, I've been told Ethanol does not have the same amount of energy as good ole petrol. I use aviation fuel in my car. We have a few stations around town that carry it, they advertise it as 100 octane racing fuel. I spoke with the fuel delivery driver who had just come from the Crystal airport. He told me that the old Cessnas require some lead so they came up with a low lead fuel. He told me there was enough lead to lubricate the valve seats. I had my valve seats replaced (I'm guessing they machine out the head and press in new ones) and don't need the lead but the higher octane sure makes it run nice.

Cheers, Mike

Lack of ethanol messes up my performance, as well.

Curious, what are they getting for those fuels? There is only one Sunoco station near me that has 260GT, and they want $9.49/gal for it. That makes for one high priced drive. No farm country left up here so they have us by the gonads.

I would try a local regional airport up near you, see if they will sell you some gas in a 5 gal can , I got some locally near a drag race track for 7.85 a gal , for 116 octane blended it with 93 octane and netted 100 octane with lead

I think it was the old fashion good ole *** kicken fuel that gave me better mileage and not the lead. But a tank full of real lead surely didn't hurt. I have traveled 3 times back and forth to Florida from MN and you can tell right away when you hit a gas staion pumping fuel w/o the ethenol... better getup and greater MPG. Outr here in the midwest you have a better chance of finding stations with leaded fuel. There is one in Anoka MN on HW 10 that comes to mind. 2OLDS4U try NH ...some farm land still up there. Keep away from Vermont they don't use gas up there ha ha

Hey 1970Supremevert, where are you in Maryland? We may be neighbors!
As for the Loch Raven Sunoco, I have purchased "fuel" there for years for various cars over the years. However I heard the business changed hands and some of the "good stuff" was no longer available. They used to pump 100 out of the ground and Cam2 out of drums. The owner of the station was a racer and would ask what your engine combo. was before selling you fuel that may have been incorrect for your application. I haven't ben there since last season, but I did hear it has changed ownership.

Dave , I am in Rockville, I went to MIR last year they had many choices at the track but kinda pricey, go figure, there is a Sunoco off 301 that has CAM 2 pumps on the premises and last year was 8.50 at the pump for leaded 110.arent you in SOMD??

Plus it takes the energy equivalent of 1-1/2 gallons of gasoline to make 1-gallon of ethanol.

Thanks for the suggestions 1970supremevert and nevvet. After doing some checking, it may helpful to all of you to check out these sites that are national:

http://www.racegas.com/fuelfinder

And after that, you can find the fuel you want, leaded or not. Some at the pump, others sold in 5 gal containers:

http://www.racegas.com/fuel/index

Hope this helps some.
