Fan Upgrade for 54 Olds 88

Any recommendations for replacing the existing 4 blade fan with a 6 or 8 blade fan on a 54 Rocket 88? Just thinking of ways to improve the engine cooling system?

If you are having heating issues it's probably not the fan.I do know on A/C cars they did sometimes install a shroud ( very rare part) but I would start looking at why it's giving you problems. I can run my 55 in 110 degree heat and the temp hardly gets past the half way mark. Is you radiator in good shape?... Tedd

The most effective thing I did was to install a coolant recovery tank. It would always heat up then overflow enough fluid to leave the header tank mostly empty. Coolant recovery tank will solve that. Mine is a basic Holiday, no window washer, so I put it on the passenger side fender near the front, where the window washer would normally go. Right where the radiator overflow goes. Went in real nice and completely solved the coolant overflow problem.

It should help with heating, more fluid, more and better cooling.

Having you considered installing an electric fan? You can get one off of a late model Ford Taurus or Ford Windstar for pretty cheap at your local salvage yardl.

I have not had any problems so far with the cooling system. the fan was damaged so I thought if I have to replace it, I would see if there was a 6 or 8 blade replacement. I plan on entering a historic rally in which the car will be sitting and idling for relatively long periods of time so I am thinking of ways to help keep the engine temp manageable.

I have actually purchased some waterless coolant that I will install after a good flushing of the system.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I have had my 54 out when it has been over 100 and no problems.
