Factory Stereo Speakers in a rag top

So I guess this was not an option so with that said could you not get a stereo AM FM and an 8 track in a rag top from the factory or did they just run one speaker?? I have seen $50 K rag tops with 8 tracks so what is Factory correct and what is not ???????????????

What year/model are you asking about? Typically, 1968-early 70 A-Bodies were a 2 speaker stereo (including 8 track). One front speaker and one rear speaker including convertibles.

My car has both AM?FM and 8 track. It also has only two speakers as mrolds69 said. The rear seat speaker is on the passenger side in a cutout space behind the rear seat. It fires directly into the back of the rear seat. As you can imagine, the sound isn't great but it's all their was back then.

I installed a factory AM/FM 'bi-phonic' radio in my '71 Cutlass convertible. It's a mono radio with a fader between the front dash speaker and the rear speaker mounted behind the back seat. It seems to be the correct radio given the limited speaker placement in a convertible.

For the radios of those years in convertibles, I prefer the AM-FM mono with the rear speaker option over the AM-FM stereo. I have both - the mono version in my '68 and the stereo version in my '69. When the top is down on either car and the rear speaker mounted behind the rear seat back, it's virtually impossible to hear the rear speaker and that's why I prefer the mono version as you still get ALL of the sound out of the front speaker. With the stereo version, you only hear HALF of the sound out of the front speaker as the rear speaker is muffled to practically quiet.

If you want stereo sound, you can put two 3 1/2 inch speakers in the dash to replace the 4X10. There are ready-made mounting panels that will hold them or you can make your own. This is the best sounding alternative for using the factory speaker locations. If you are after the original sound and placement they have already been explained.

Yes, in the area behind where your "amplifier" is mounted. I just looked at the rear speaker in my '69 4-4-2 convertible and the sound blasts out towards the boot, with the magnet end towards where your amplifier is mounted. I'm pretty sure it's a standard issue (for the time) 8X12 10 ohm speaker with a single wire as the speaker is grounded to the metal on which it is mounted. That speaker has never been out of the car so it was mounted that way at Fremont, where the car was built. As I mentioned before, the sound just isn't there at all with the top down, when the boot is filled with all of the top.
