Is this extra MSD mess required to run?

Do I need the 6AL box and tach box to run this distributor? This wiring is atrocious and I want it all to go away without replacing the distributor if I don't have to.

if you have one of their 3-wire Ready To Run distributors (such as the p/n 8529 for SBO) then no - you don't need the 6AL, and possibly not the tach adapter either depending on the tach itself - you need to provide more details as to what it's all wired to for any more real potential help though.

That's part of the problem, I have no idea. Can't see any part number on the distributor and it looks like a 1st grader wired it up. Running the factory tach.

you probably wouldn't have an issue running the factory tach off an MSD Ready to Run distributor - they're a simple 3-wire hookup essentially same as a factory unit, albeit it's electronic inside. Google the 8529 so you can see what it looks like inside and out - then take your distributor cap off to see if it looks about the same = that may help you a bit.

See if you can locate the wires coming out of the distributor base. If there's only 2, then you need the box(es). If there are 3, it may be ready to run or e-curve. If it's a 2, pro billet, i need a good, used base.
The wiring is pretty simple; if just needs cleaned up. Is the car a G-body, 82-88? I've only seen the tach adapter on those. If not, they may not have hooked the tach up correctly. It should be right on the side of the 6 box. The instructions are online; try Summit.

That's a pro billet. I'll buy it from you.
To replace, you need an HEI unit or poins distributor and coil setup. That's personal preference and/or year requirements for OCA shows.

HEI won't fit. I honestly have no idea what this is worth nor do I know what a stock distributor will cost. If it's like anything else I've priced probably super rare and $1,000.

You can get a carb spacer, modify your original air cleaner or there is anoffset aircleaner base available to fit an HEI.

other options include original distributor w points or electronic conversion, or some aftermarket distributors have a small cap like the OE

The MSD 8529 is a small-cap 3-wire drop in if you're not interested in a later-model OEM-style HEI - I have plenty of room for it on my '72 350 (Edelbrock 2711 intake) and I assume you'd have similar clearance on the 455 - It would probably also be compatible with your rally pack tach without the adapter box.

It would probably take only a couple hours to clean that up. I really like the rev limiter with my 4 speed..

If you're not looking for the numbers distributor then any olds points distributor would work and could be bought and rebuilt for cheap.

At this point I'm wanting to clean this up and get the car ready to sell. Everyone says an HEI won't fit with an Edelbrock Performer, which is what I have, so I guess I need a stock distributor, even though I have an HEI on the bench.

I know for a fact HEI will fit a performer intake. No problems whatsoever.

I have run the factory Rally Pac tach with the MSD 6AL with no problems. No need for the tach adapter.

Where is the ignition box mounted? If you take the time to do it right, it’s pretty easy to have the box and keep the wiring neat and tidy. The problem is most hacks either are to lazy or impatient to do it neatly.

Right now it's up under the fender by the battery. I just want a clean, original look and I think all of the MSD parts are unnecessary. This is no race car and I honestly can't believe the MSD system is a huge improvement in this application.

Apparently I had the Performer confused with the 04B when I was doing research and was told the 04B won't fit with the HEI. So the HEI WILL fit with the Performer 455 I have now but might require modification to the rear of the air cleaner base for clearance. Am I finally on the right page? lol

The rev limiter is a nice feature, and longer ignition point life is a added bonus (not that it matters in your case) but I agree, for 99% of the people who just drive the cars, the aftermarket ignition isn’t needed.

Everything is removed and posted in the for sale section. I'm sure someone can use this stuff, make an offer!

Better already. Now to degrease and power wash. Even found the original battery hold down under the battery. 🙄

Thought that was A/C cars only? This is a non-air car.

That's where they drilled holes for the coil.

Why wouldn’t they have used the factory coil mounting bracket? Guess they wanted to show off their newly purchased go fast parts?
