Thinking about adding some electrically controlled exhaust/header cut outs. Currently have stainless steel long tube headers with 2.5" pipes back to the mufflers. Would like to install an X pipe and run stainless entire length of exhaust system. Please share any feedback, recommendations and pictures / videos you may have.

I always thought this was the clever way to do it. Having said that, I've never understood the need for electric cutouts. Other than at the track, why do you need to open them up on the street? Just to **** off the neighbors? At the track I've got the car in the air to swap rear tires anyway, so pulling off the caps to open the system is no big deal. Sorry, I've never seen the need for electrics.

 

I like the clean look of Joe P's picture above however I'm not a fan of the xpipe. I prefer true duals or hpipe. Don't cheap out on the electric actuators, do some research.

 

Yeah, I hear ya Joe. Just want to have a little fun with the Mustang and Camaro boys that switch to "track" mode as they buzz by me.

I think Hooker and Pypes makes some decent setups. Hoping some members here will share their setups and pros/cons

 

Didn’t Dynomax offer a muffler with spring loaded cutouts? Cruising around, there isn’t enough exhaust flow to open the valve. Stand on the loud pedal, the exhaust forced open the cutout. I thought it was a pretty neat idea, I wonder how well the springs and valve would hold up long term?

 

Exhaust cutouts create a tuning problem. Do you tune for the way the vehicle is going to be driven 99% of the time...or do you tune for the way it's going to be driven in "Showoff" mode? If you're not tuning for "showoff" mode (i.e., tuning for maximum performance with the open exhaust) you're just a little kid that never outgrew the "Mommy! Look at me! LOOK, Mommy!" stage of development.

Buy a real, performance exhaust system that meets all federal/state/local regulations for noise. "Forget" to install the cutouts. Tune to suit. Done.

 

My BBC Chevelle has 3" exhaust dumped right behind the bumper. Big case Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers (17792), QTP 3" cutouts, and H pipe. Cutouts Y pipes are attached directly to the headers, then it goes to H-pipe. This setup has been on the car for 6 years, no issues with leaks or motors (yet).
Even through the 3" exhaust it sounds nice and tame. Car has a noticeable deep rumble at idle, and it gets louder as you step on it, but not obnoxiously loud at all. Inside there is no drone whatsoever, and it's quiet enough where you can have a conversation with your significant other (if you are into that sort of thing), enjoy some music, answer your (handsfree) phone etc.
Open the cutouts and it sounds like all hell broke loose. The sound is deep and loud, like thunder. Car goes from mild to wild on the switch of the button.
That's why I installed them, cause I wanted a quiet car that I can can cruise around in, but that can go loud when I want it. Whether it's scaring Mustang and Challenger guys, or pissing off that ****head neighbor they are just plain fun to have.......especially if you have HP to back up the bark.

 

If you want to put electric cutouts on a car I think it is fine. If you do it to make you feel like a teenager again that is a good reason. I agree with Eric, don't cheap out on them. I have a 57 Chevy I am going to build (another story for another day) and I intend to use them and Dynomax super turbos. It will never see a track so they will be just for fun and grins. And I turned 74 this week so if it takes me back a few years that is a good thing.

I looked into these and it seems the spring loaded valve in these mufflers were used to reduce droning. Not sure if they ever made anything that would produce an open header situation.

Do you have these on your car? The reviews on Summit's website say that the motors fail. Hopefully the manufacture has upgraded to something better.
