Pypes makes a trumpet for a 3 inch exhaust. The only issue it that it reduces maybe to less than 2.5" ID for about 2 inches before it flares out. Will this reduce performance?
Is it true an exhaust is only as big as its smallest diameter? So if it's 3" from the headers back and has a 2.5" trumpet area, will that mean it won't perform as well as a 3" all the way back?
.....and if you get them BEWARE - they can have some VERY sharp edges on the back edge (trumpet exit). Put some on a customer's car and when washing....yep....slice!! Did a bit of fine filing and sanding to prevent that from happening again.
If it matters, they may still have the "Pypes" logo laser etched on the top of the trumpet. They are stainless which is nice but they'll never look exactly like chrome (the originals).
Have you looked into the venturi of a carburetor? That necks down too. The airflow increases as diameter decreases to maintain the same mass air flow - what's important isn't CFM, it's lbs/hr. Now, there are other effects, such as boundary layer friction, that can reduce airflow, but the short length of that neck-down makes it negligible. If you were comparing an entire exhaust system of 2.5" vs 3", then there would be a measurable difference. Here, not so much.
The biggest problem I have with the Pypes trumpets is the big PYPES logo engraved on them... I have to polish that off for my H/O.
After the mufflers, you might as well reduce down to 2.5" pipe so it fits easier anyways. And even the 2.5" tailpipes fit like complete crap, which is why mine are still sitting on the shelf with the exhaust dumped at the axle. I may go to 2.25" after the mufflers if I can find some pipes that aren't crimp bent down to the point there's no cross section left in the bends.
[QUOTE=83hurstguy;1145486]. And even the 2.5" tailpipes fit like complete crap,
Anyone else have a problem with the RH 2.5" tailpipe or did I just get "lucky". LH side came out OK, but no matter what (short of bending) I couldn't get the pipe to line up with the cutout. Finally got fed up, gave up and never even put the trumpets on. I may do what you're thinking and go with OE size t/pipes.

The the guy that did my 2.5" exhaust has been doing exhaust many years.
I see many Oldsmobiles with the tailpipes hanging low and very visible from side view.
Mine do lineup with the bumper cut outs and they are tucked up very nice.
He did have to move the pipes slightly in board from the stock location, out of the wheelhouse area to make room for my 295/55/15 tires.
Here here is what I ended up with. I was very satisfied with the results.

Those look fine to me. Could you post a photo of your rear hanger/s?
Did he use the stock ones?
Too bad Torque Tech is closed. They made really good exhaust parts. I'm surprised they didn't sell the business to someone, instead of just closing it down forever.
