Engine ID?

Hi,

Can someone tell me what engine this is? Picture is from a '67 442, but I thought that 400 engine should be bronze instead of gold. Back then I believe the gold engines were 330's so wanted to know which one this is but hard to tell from the pic and my untrained eye.

Perhaps a 400 in the wrong color?

Thanks!

You can't count on someone else painting it the correct color. It's a big block, but that could still include a 400, 425 or 455. What I'm using to key it out is the rib between the water pump and intake, just to the right of the oil fill tube. A small block wouldn't have that as the bottom of the intake would sit level with the block casting numbers. The big block intake is higher up due to the taller deck height. The oil fill tube has the correct cap for a 400 or 425, but someone could have installed that tube in a 455 block too. So I can help you get to that point, you'll need someone to read off the casting number and letter to know which big block it has.

^^^ This.

I've seen many a "restored" 442 with the 400 incorrectly painted gold. I think many uninformed people are not aware of the use of bronze on 400 motors, since few places sell it, but many sell the gold.

Of course, it makes one wonder what else is wrong with the restoration...

Thanks guys. Spoke to the seller of this car and he said the engine is a 455. Either way, it's a 442 clone and here's the ad.

Typical. No mention of it being a clone anywhere in the ad.

I'm sure he would have told any buyer who didn't think to ask though, right? Riiiiiiiight.
