Engine I.D.

I have a 68 cutlass assembly manual and it shows different versions of applications for engine numbers like : 654, 657, etc. How do you identify which model or engine you have to correspond to pictures in manual? I don't have the sticker on my oil fill tube.

It took me awhile to decipher those codes. You just have to study the assembly manual and see how those codes are applied. Here is what I was able to determine:

654 = 350 ci block. It comes in the 250hp version (low compression), 310hp (high compression), 325hp (high compression) and the highway patrol version (high compression). These were used in the F85, Cutlass, Cutlass S, Cutlass Supreme, Vista Cruiser. the Delmont 88, W31s, and highway patrol cars.

657 = 455 ci block. A version of this was used in the Hurst Olds in '68, and these also went into the Delmont 88, the Delta 88, and the Delta 88 Custom.

658 = 400 ci block. As well, it comes in both low and high compression versions. There are 3 high compression versions (360hp, 350hp and 325hp). There is one low compression version (290hp). These went into highway patrol cars, W30s, 4-4-2s, the 4-4-2 turnpike cruiser, and the Vista Cruiser.

664 = 455 ci block. These went into the Delmont 88, the Delta 88, the Delta 88 Custom, the 98, and the Toronado.

I know the numbers (654, 657, 658 and 664) are right for the block sizes. I might not be completely right on uses of the blocks.

I'm hoping others will step in and provide further detail.

I can't speak for 1968, but here's what the 3-digit engine codes meant in 1970:
654 = all 350 c.i.
657 = 455 c.i. for F-85, Cutlass, Wagons, Delta 88, and 98.
659 = 455 c.i. for 442 only.
664 = 455 c.i. for Toronado only.

I can't remember exactly where I got this information, but I'm certain it was from from factory literature. I suggest that the 1968 usage would've been similar; that is, 664 was probably for Toro only, and 657 was for other 455 applications (probably including the Hurst/Olds).

Ultimately, each engine type had a 2-letter code (and associated part number) assigned to it, and that code determined exactly how each engine was built. But the 3-digit codes were a handy way to group similar engines together. In the engine assembly manual, you will find different instructions for the assembly of the 664 engine (Toronado) as compared to others.
