Embarrassed to ask.

I need some help on this one.I like many have had issues with an improper Fuel Gauge reading.I have replaced my Chinese Fuel Sending Unit with one from my Friends at Fusick.I have a good ground .I have elevated the float outside of the tank and get an acceptable reading at the Gauge.
When I install the sending unit into the tank. And secure the Clamping Ring I am once again at a Null position or Empty with no movement at the Gauge.
My question is this.Where does the Rubber Grommet belong.Between the Tank and the Sending unit .Or between the sending unit and the Metal Clamping Ring.
Thanks in advance
Ron Roth

A gauge stuck on E indicates a short circuit.

The purpose of the rubber grommet is to seal the joint between the sending unit and the tank, so that's where it should go. I'm not sure how you're even getting it to fit anywhere else.

X2 on everything Jaunty stated. Ron, disconnect the wire from the gauge at the tank, and with the key on, see if the gauge goes past full. If it does you may have gotten a faulty sending unit.

To check the wiring between the gauge and where you disconnect the sending unit wire. Disconnect the wire at the sending unit. As Old Cutlass said the gauge will go past full with the key in the on position. Take a jumper wire and ground the wire that goes back to the gauge. The gauge should move to E.

I'm with you guys. When the Sending unit was unattached to the tank "Ground intact' I could get reading 1/4- 1/2-3/4 and Full by manually raising the float.I reassembled the sending unit and he seal into the tank and now get an E Reading.

Apparently the sending unit positive lead is grounding when the sending unit is installed. Look for metal touching metal that shouldn't be touching or something like that.

I went through all that also. Then finally said ok and ran a new wire for all three legs of the gas gauge and it works great. Can't see them and it is accurate now.
