Edelbrock 600 CFM--undersized?

1969 442.

Somewhere along the way, someone replaced the QJ with an Edelbrock 600 CFM carb, and a performer intake. The manual choke is held open with bailing wire. Bitch to start cold. Question--

Original 400 CI, is the 600CFM sufficient to feed the beast? Feels like it doesn't have what it needs. However, it's only on there until I get time to install the Holley EFI QJ kit (early summer?)

edit; I do have the original QJ but it's in a basket and missing parts. That's how I got it. I will have it restored at some point.

It should run ok with that carb for a while. I wouldn't do anything until you get the EFI on it. Your cold start issue probably is not the choke wired open, you just need to operate the throttle until it warms a bit.

The original Q-Jet is probably 750 cfm. If you are going with EFI why would you have the Q-Jet restored? Being a spread bore it is not going to fit the Edelbrock Performer.

I would restore it because it's original to the car and I'm keeping all the original parts, just in case I get an offer I can't refuse from someone looking for originality. It's not a common QJ, from what I gather. The EFI is the Holley Sniper Quadrajet.

The 2151 will accommodate both square and spread bore flanges.

Well then I think this is good news--with a proper amount of air/fuel at WOT, I may see a performance increase. Thank you all for your thoughts.

Sorry I gave you bad info on the manifold. If it were mine I would send the Q-Jet out and have it rebuilt and then put it on instead of the Holley FI. You will save a lot of money and headaches.
