dying the door panels

The carpet on my door panels is pretty faded after 45 years. Other than that, they are in phenomenal shape. Rather than spending hundreds of dollars for new door panels that are really not needed, I'm thinking about dying them.

Is this a good idea? What are most reputable brands? Any ideas?

SEM products. It's a flexible paint, not a dye

Yes dyeing them will work well. Both SEM and MarHyde are the older company's. I painted the door panels on my 2007 Sport Trac recently. Just clean well before starting and follow their instructions, and I think several thin coats seem to work best, rather than trying to cover everything with 1or 2 coats. Larry

Use a good upholstery dye, it'll last for years.

I can't vouch for the other colours but the black duplicolour for fabric and vinyl did a fantastic job on my carpet and even great on the lower part of my vinyl door panels. I would use the SEM on my dash if I were to paint it though.

I had this issue with my door carpet and floor carpet. It had faded to an off black/brownish color. I used fabric/vinyl dye on the carpet areas and it came out looking like new. There are some odors that take time to dissipate but that's minor.

Here's what I used, it gave excellent results and it's not expensive either.

Thanks for all of the tips. After reading all of the reviews, I just ordered a can of dupli-color from Amazon. At $14 with free shipping, I'll give it a shot. Thanks again.

The nice part is black is the easiest color to work with.

It's like 8 bucks at Napa, but then again you didn't have that Napa know how that you do now.

That's not really required for spraying carpet. I would definitely use it on say the dash or console though. I have sprayed the duplicolour on my door vinyl, plastic steering column panel and carpet and have no issues with flaking or adhesion whatsoever. Your call obviously.

No NAPA near by, and no free shipping from their site. So it all balances out in the end.

when doing carpet i like to use a stiff brush while painting so as to get coverage on all the fibers and keep the carpet from becoming stiff after it dries.i'm currently doing blue carpet on a convertible that in spots has faded to white and it's looking pretty good.
