Dying carpet

I have a new red carpet and want to change to dark brown. Can I just dye it and be done or is there something else I can do to make it dark brown.

I've never dyed carpet before but I know color. If you are going from red to brown you will need to first counter the red with a green dye. Then go with the brown dye. If the carpet goes under the seats you might remove the seats and practice the color where the seat will cover. The green dye would probably be about the color of lime coolaid for that purpose.

This might be a silly question but...with the cost of replacement carpets being (at least I think) very reasonable in price, why would you want to dye it? I could understand if part of it had faded out and you were trying to bring it back, I think we all have probably done that. But to dye the entire thing? Isn't that a little too much time and work for a negligible cost savings?

Repro carpets suck compared to good originals.

I'm sure that some do. But I put mine in almost 6 years ago and it has held up extremally well.

I believe my carpet was changed 15 years ago, just vacuumed it yesterday and it looks brand new.

I still have the original carpet in my 72. It's black 80/20 loop and it really good condition since it had mats over top all the time. The places it faded badly were by the sills and transmission hump. I sprayed it with fabric dye and it came back to life like new. Takes awhile for the smell to go away from the spray though. Never had to install a new carpet so I can't say whether it's good or bad. Most of them I've seen do look pretty good, and they aren't that expensive. If I had to change color, I'd probably go with a new one.

I purchased carpet from ACC on special for around $100.00. Doesn't seem worth the hassle of dying it.

I got a buddy that dyed his seat belts, the black comes off on his shirts, but another guy I know dyed his seat material, he says it’s nice, but he hasn’t driven the car yet. There is a setting process. Not sure on it though. Vinegar maybe?
isnt the carpet nylon or a man made material? dye is best for cotton.
