Dumb gas cap question
Dumb gas cap question
I have a 85 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale Brougham should I be using a vented gas cap or not??? there are 2 options at the parts store.
Whats the difference between the two?
Thanks in advance

I run a vented cap. It allows air into the tank to replace the fuel that is being sucked out by the fuel pump.
Non vented caps are asking for trouble. If air is not getting into the tank, it will begin to collapse like when drinking from a juice box If the tank vent is not there, or clogged up.
Some cars have a vent on the top of the tank that allows air in, and have a sealed cap, but I see no harm in running a vented cap because it is supposed to function as a 1 way valve like a pcv valve does.

I got a nasty surprise when the vent on the cap of my old Dodge colt blocked ... came back to the car sitting in a puddle of gas. The tank had pressurized and blown half a gallon out the carb overflow and down the engine.

Hi, I just replaced my fuel tank in my 67 442 with a non-vented tank. I put an electric fuel pump in the tank. The car runs great for 15 or 20 mins then has a significant loss of power. I put the old non-vented cap on. I believe I need a vented cap. I went to the auto parts store and they only list a non-vented gas cap and weren't eager to help. Anyhow, does anyone know the mfg and part number of a vented gas cap I could use. Thanks
