Headed to a movie last night, parked right in front of old movie theater - perfect parking space. Waited for all the cars to go by, started to open door, put one foot out, turned headlights back on as I thought I noticed one was dim, figured I'd check it out before heading into the movie as we were early. As I continued to get out of my car an SUV was going by, clipped the end of the door, and crumpled it forward. Even though I was already out of the car as he moved past me I guess I was technically in the wrong (as he was passing my car he was drifting towards the parked cars as there is a crosswalk sign in the middle of the street - if not for that we would have be fine). Frustrating, I needed a new door(s) anyway but this means I need to look for one now.
In the big scheme of things this is so minor, just very frustrating. Literally just one second later, nothing happens, I park where I normally park, it doesn't happen, We were not planning on going to the movie, decided at the last minute. My Marauder was out but decided to park that and take the convertible because it was so nice. Could have should have would have.
Oh and this was to the Cutlass not one of the W30s so even more of a "Phew"

When I first started as a police officer I was working with a training officer like most departments. My partner was driving and made a traffic stop on what we thought was a drunk driver...... all over the road. Well we approached the drivers car and my partner had unfortunately left his driver door open just a little bit. You guessed it, another drunk driver came up from behind us, side swiped the unit and sliced that door of as clean as a whistle. After we got through doing all the DUI tests on both drivers my partner said........ uhhhh, don't ever leave your door open.
yeah, I feel like a knucklehead, especially when I am the one who always tells the whole family - watch when you open the door, don't hit the curb with the bottom, don't hit the other car, watch for traffic, etc.

Hi Steven,
Sorry to hear about your accident. Don't be hard on yourself. I know how you love your children. Could have been a lot worse, even catastrophic.
Thank God. Get your door repaired or replaced. Materials are replaceable.
Stay well, Harry

Another reason why I'm so reluctant to drive mine anywhere but cruses/shows. Seems the general public is oblivious to special cars and all common sense. I've often thought about assembling a clone so I don't need to worry about it but I wouldn't want it hurt either. Drivers today are so absent-minded. I truly believe the general population is getting dumber in some (most?) ways. (note the dumber comment is not aimed at you Steve. I feel your pain. Hope its just a door and not the jamb too).
Thanks everyone, yeah, all good as mentioned its a small thing. I think it is just the door that is damaged, the good news is there was just enough rust and bondo on that door it had builtin crumple zones. I need to check on the jamb, didn't even think about that - the fender was untouched believe it or not. Look at the pic below you can see a patch panel on the bottom right got torn off and the edge of the door just ripped apart from rust.

99% of SUV drivers are either distracted by their phones or can't see over the hood/fenders of their own vehicle. I never understood how one can hit a NON-MOVING object with your vehicle without some mental incapacity.

Hope you got their insurance info.
In Illinois, I'm at fault - door opening into traffic, even though door was already open
