drive shaft stripes

1970 442 convertible, i know i saw a thread pertaining {sp} to this but cannot find it. what are the correct colors, placement, and width of the stripes on the driveshaft for the 442 vert? thanks charlie,,,,

hey buddie if this helps according to gm and i had 2 friends who worked at the lansing plant were used for balancing only.

Check the assembly manual. The colors are in that forget which section

Charlie, here's the chart for the 1970 models. More than likely you're looking at the 35M40 112" wheel base for CS 442. I'm not 100% sure but I think the 4A4 was for MT cars.



As far as width and spacing, I can only go by what I found on my 72 Cutlass S. It has a different set of color bands because it's a 350 and different model year. From what I've been told, the color bands were used to easily identify what drive shaft to put in a car at a glance, like the ident used for the front sway bars for different lines. I used the 'ghost outlines' I found on my car to duplicate the widths and placement as best I could. It's on the car now but here's what it turned out like. BTW you might remember this because you also were concerned that I kept the original Saginaw U-joints.

Anytime Charlie, hope it helps. BTW is your car MT or AT? Curious if I guessed right. When I cleaned my driveshaft (carefully) I never did find a part number stamping on it anywhere. Please post a pic when you're done!
