Drive it like you have an egg between your foot and the gas pedal

I was watching a couple Uncle Tony's Garage videos on YouTube. I already set the idle to maximum at 21 inches as one of his videos covered. Then I came across another video where he set up his vacuum gauge on the dash and tried to keep it above 15 inches while accelerating, like driving with an a egg under you right foot. I didn't go so far as setting up a gauge on the dash, but I gave it a try. I usually get about 11 or 12 mpg driving normally. Using his recommendation, it got about 14 mpg on an 80 mile drive. It only takes wiggling your toes on the gas to bring it up to 65 mph with the torque of the 455, so it wasn't too hard to do.

I agree with the "not". It may be ok for a daily driver, but why have a 455 if you're not going to use it. I just wanted to see how much of a difference there was. 2 mpg isn't really worth it.

Road mileage on my slightly cammed up 455 in my H/O is 12.2 without AC running, driving normally.

Those of us who were driving during the gas crises of the 1970s are mildly amused by all this.

When I was 15 and learning how to drive I remember my Dad telling me that. To accelerate like there was an egg between my foot and the gas pedal. Even now, sometimes I drive slow and easy while other times I enjoy banging through the gears.

My 1st car, a hand-me-down 78 Caprice, had the econo-vacuum gauge.

Meanwhile, I waxed a Skyline GTR on the beltway after cars and coffee todsy in the 442.

Syphoning gas may cause lead poisoning

Maybe 25 years ago when it still had lead, now a better chance of cancer of brain damage.
