This is the drag racing I remember. The stands were full. They did lack a bit in litter control and safety.

It would be nice to selectively travel in time on demand. Id like to spend a weekend there along with some other places.
When you think about it, isn't that what this classic car hobby among other things is about? Taking yourself back to a certain time, sharing memories and trying to relive certain things in a way? Keeps us young right?

 

When drag racing was fun and you did not need a boat load of sponsors to participate.

Wow, that brings back some memories. I've actually seen a few of those cars race in person at Pomona in the late 60's.

 

Great pictures and thanks so much for taking the time to post so many. I didn't start following drag racing until 1966 at Dragway 42, West Salem, Ohio. Ran my 66 Cutlass in BB/AM. Had fun. Dragway 42 was rebuilt and reopened in 2017. Need to make it back for some vintage racing.

FABULOUS pictorial !!!!! Back in those days........ "Run what you brung" was the alive. A "high roller" had a "tow car" and "Daddy Big Bucks" had a tow car and trailer.
Olds didn't have anything til 1964 with the 4-4-2 (330). Then 1965 brought out the 400 cubic incher and the race was on. My first "modern car" was a used '65 4-4-2 convertible with a 4 speed and 4.10 rear end.

 

Any idea where the clips of Jenkins were taken. Where were the NHRA nationals held that year? I know the Winternationals were held at the old Dallas International Motor Speedway, once or twice. Don't remember what years.

 

 

I was at Dragway 42 this fall. Being from the Youngstown/Warren area I'd only been to 42 about a half a dozen times. Wow, what a big change. They moved the strip and did a great job modernizing the track but still keeping an older track feel. Not all blacktop like Norwalk and a lot of green space.

 

Best lookin drag strip I've ever seen. Back in the day it was mostly dirt and oily asphalt.........

My bud has a warmed up 11 SE, SRT 392 Challenger. He's tall and cannot shift it for chit. I told him to move over. I showed him how to power shift. He couldn't believe I was able to get rubber out of 4th and a chirp at 5th above the century mark. Two days later he sent me that Grumpy Youtube. He says I also have the chicken wing flap when I'm anticipating the upshift. He was also amazed at the fact I don't use the tac to shift. Told him its old skool! The engine 'ill tell you when to shift. We both get a kick out of that youtube. He's improving but still doesn't have the chicken wing. lol

I read where those guys used to rebuild there transmissions in the hotels rooms in the evening, leaving there doors opens so other racers could come buy and chat. I guess now they bring their laptops instead of drivetrain parts back to the hotel.

 

Back when all that matter was which car got to the finish line first, unlike today, with all this 'bracket racing' stuff. Might just be me, but I cannot understand this type of 'racing' - where drivers need to stay within a preset time and speed - what is the thrill & competition?

 

I think the bracket racing is something that evolved. It was drag racing based on some criteria....Weight/power or Weight/cubic inches. Now its based on time brackets ?
I have also heard recently about "Pure Stock racing" but not sure how that works, or where.
Feel free to jump in here with info..........

 

I faintly remember reading somewhere that bracket racing evolved from a plan to remake class racing which became extremely hard to manage because of all the "cheating" or something like that. It was a tool to manage and make drag racing fair?
