to do or not to do...

well with the exhaust on the 69 hurst i am thinking about upgrading to a 3 inch exhaust on it. give me more of the meaty sound to it and deeper growl. still going to keep the wz heads that are on it also. just wanted some opinions from the pros

appreciate the opinions in advance

Oh...I thought this was a marriage question and had my answer ready. Well, I wouldn't go beyond 2.5". You can get the "sound" from the type of mufflers you choose. By WZ heads, I assume that you are keeping the W & Z exhaust manifolds. I believe that they are 2.25" where the pipe meets the manifold. I've heard that your exhaust is only as big as your smallest component, so unless you go with headers, I think you're wasting your money going to 3", especially if the sound is all you're looking for. BTW, I'm far from being an expert on this. Just my observations and opinion.

I like 3" with Walker 21468 mufflers. I took the exhaust off the Rund car recently as I mostly race it, and just use header mufflers on the street. However, the 3" setup is the way to go if you run exhaust most of the time. Wanna buy mine? I can bring to the Zone show in Oct. Just my opinion, but all the chambered mufflers I have heard are "raspy" and I like the Walkers much better--straight through, no restriction, but quiet enough.

I run Walker Super Turbo mufflers and it's got that nice growl. However good sound is what sounds good to you. I'm running a 2.25" 16 year old system with two pipe from the manifolds (W & X) to the mufflers and two pipes from the mufflers back. The car can breath and she sounds awesome (IMO). Are you going to be racing the car? That's where I can see 3" exhaust pipes, but most racers would change to headers. I just don't see the value of 3" on a street car. But that's me and if we all liked the same thing, the world would be pretty boring. If you're set on 3", go for it and have fun. (Don't mind the dirty undercarriage, my car's never had a body panel or fender off. It's been painted, but never restored).

no i just love the loud sound of cars and the growl. reason i want to stick with the w & z manifold is to give it the original look to it. just trying to brainstorm with the knowledgeable people on this forum before i go out and buy some s@#$ty exhaust and not be happy with it. i like the way BIG JERR's sounds and kinda wanna do something like that noise...

I kept the 2.5" pipes and changed the mufflers made a huge difference and was inexpensive, I wouldn't bother changing the exhaust unless you are presently or in the near future start changing more things for HP. My neighbor has a 70 Cutlass with headers, his car still sounds better than mine in my opinion but I did not want to add headers so I did what I could with mufflers.

Sicky,

I'd leave the pipes as they are and Google muffler sounds and listen to various types. I hate Flowmaster but I'm an ole phart.

I have a set of Hedman Hedders with 2.5 inch exhaust and 45" Thrush glasspacks. It definitely rumbles but isn't obnoxiously loud.

i am looking into a new exhaust due to the fact that this one is pretty rusted looking and with the resto i would like new pipes. i will have to check into the muffler thing but no harm in asking about the 3" exhaust?

Everything I can remember reading leads me to believe smaller pipes help enhance low rpm torque.
Larger pipes help enhance high rpm horsepower.
For a stock street engine...I would want to build low rpm torque.

I'm totally going to break out my acoustic knowledge here.

Increasing your exhaust pipe diameter with actually increase the frequency of your exhaust moving it away from the "throaty" and rumbly note that you're probably looking for.

The way around it would be to increase the length of the pipe. I know this sounds backwards, but frequency relies on a inverse algorithm when it comes to tuning.

Bigger the pipe, longer it needs to be to produce a lower tone.

Laws of Physics strikes again..........

I also, like others who have posted. choose the Walker Dynomax mufflers. They have the true muscle car sound from the 60s-early 70s. Flowmaster sound fake and have that resonance noise, and do not flow as well as the Dynomax in recorded tests. Also, using an exhaust system bigger than your motor needs, will actually cause your car to go slower. Like cams, bigger is not always better.

Torque Tech 2.5" mandrel bent pipes and Walker SuperTurbo long case mufflers (#17749).

Best sound - nice around town, and loud at WOT.

If you want it to sound load as hell but get by the cops what about a set of elec cut outs? in 1970 pontiac had a vac operated exhaust that would do have a slow thru sound
with the pull of a ****. You can find some you tube stuff on it they made a commercial called the humbler was a guy going thru a drive in with the voe growling check it out.

Remember the 442 (and probably the Hursts) came with 1-7/8" and 2" exhaust pipes from the factory. So, 2.25" or 2.5" really make a difference. Personally, I wouldn't go bigger than 2.5" for a street car.

My 95 caprice actually has the cutouts on it (not the electronic ones but bolted on none the less). there are some nice ones out there but i am not sure if i wanna go that route on this car. what i think i am going to go with, especially after talking with you guys and thanks for all the help is a 2.5" exhaust with the dynomax v/t's. which suprisingly enough is the same setup my caprice has (except i have the none flap version of the mufflers). Does that sound like a good setup to you guys?

I think you will be happy with that setup. Dynomax makes a high quality muffler, and you won't be going too big with the 2.5 inch pipe. You can always have cutouts installed later if you want that super rumble for the strip or a car show.

i do love the rumble of the open exhaust on my caprice but idk why it just seems like it wouldnt be right on that car for some reason. now does it matter what actual pipes to get or is there no biggy on that one?

You can either get the aluminized pipes or stainless steel pipes. You can also pay extra to have the pipes mandrel bent. FWIW, I had aluminized pipes installed and they weren't mandrel bent. Eventhough it was done on the cheap it sounds great and was excellent work!
