I bought a 1972 Cutlass back in July. In it was a HEI look-a-like distributer. I want to be able to use the original air cleaner so I bought a remanufactured distributor and a Igniter II with Flamethrower coil. According to my shop manual there should be a black wire with pink stripe and a yellow wire from the starter solenoid going to the old coil. As you can see in my pics I have a yellow but the black doesn't have the pink stripe. I have tried cleaning the wire to no avail. I know the Igniter II requires 12 volts. When I put my volt meter on the existing two wires when the engine is running, the reading is all over the place and cannot get a true reading. So could the black wire in my photo be the one with pink on it or is it one the previous owner found that is 12 volts? As you can see by my pics it disappears behind the red distributor cap into the wiring harness which one of the previous owners sprayed some kind of black undercoating substance on a lot of my wires, I cannot decipher any wires to the right of the pics. Where is a good source for the 12 volts. The one in the fuse block marked IGN? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Wire it to figure 1. The ignitor red and black wire are self explanatory, the wire that says "wire form ignition switch" run to the IGN terminal at the fuse block. Separate the yellow and black wires, cap or tape them up separately and tuck them into the harness. If the car does not fire while cranking, connect the yellow wire to the coil+ post.
