Diesel cleaner?

Is it a good idea to use diesel fuel as a cleaner? A guy was in the shop yesterday telling me to put some in the crankcase and let the motor run for 15 min, then change oil.The 350 has not run in 19 years and she is pretty gunky on the insideAny suggestions would be appreciated.

Ted

diesel doesn't have the lubricity that it used to have. i'd either put a couple cans of seafoam or marvel mystery oil in it if it was me.

x3,back in the day it was a common practice to flush a engine if it was sludged up but we always added a couple of quarts of regular oil to the mix....Tedd

I would pull the valve covers first and see how bad it is. You do not want a lot of old crude deposites to break loose and run through your motor. If its all gunked up, clean it the best you can, put the valve covers back on and then do what others have suggested.

I use a quart of transmission fluid and drive it for about 3-500 miles, while monitoring temps and oil pressure.
