Decipher my cowl tag!

I'm sure there probably isn't anything special to be found...but I'm curious.

"4D" means that the car was assembled in the fourth week (D) of April (4) of 1972. That's all I can tell. Others should be on her shortly with a full decode.

I'll add this:

flame orange lower color
vinyl top
saddle vinyl bucket seats

But I don't see a vinyl top in your photo.

Ooh, her birthday's coming! Good. I think I'm going to get her new seats.
I figured it was a vinyl top at some point. There are some marks on the corners of the roof where a previous owner replaced it and didn't do a very good job sealing it off.

Actually, to properly parse this, isn't it that the "3" indicates Oldsmobile, the "42" indicates that it's a Cutlass Supreme, and the "57" that indicates that it's a hardtop coupe?

G is assembly plant, 91042 is Fisher body ID, not related to VIN.

Alright everything is jumbled as far as the results above so lets clarify for Keegan.

72 = 1972
34257 = Oldsmobile (3) Cutlass Supreme (42) Hardtop Coupe (57)
G = Framingham, Mass Fisher Body Plant
91042 = Fisher Body Unit #
979 = Saddle in color themed interior
A51 = RPO code for Strato Bucket Seats
65 T = Flame Orange Lower Body Color (65) Covert Beige Vinyl Top (T)
04D = 4th week (D) of April (04) 1972 begin assembly

I've seen this before. What does "covert" mean? Is it a color? A style of vinyl top?

I always thought it meant "secret" or "hidden" as in "The CIA conducts covert operations."

Covert Beige is the name of the color.

This is still ambiguous. Does it mean light beige, dark beige, medium beige, bluish beige, reddish beige, what? "Covert" is not a word that describes a color.

Thanks guys! Any way to tell whether it was a column/floor shift originally? I think it was column originally. The column still has the little slot.

It's not my friend. I have no friends.

The point in giving a cute name to a color is to evoke in the mind's eye what the color looks like. That's why we have "sky" blue or "baby" blue or "navy" blue or "sunset" red or "metallic" green or whatever. "Covert" doesn't evoke anything except some color-naming guy in Oldsmobile's paint department who lost his job after naming this color.

I saw a car on a new car lot whose color was listed on the window sticker as "reflex" blue. "Reflex" blue? What's with that? "Reflex" tells you as much about the car's blueness as "covert" does about a car's beigeness.

For the record, the car I was looking at was a dark blue.
