Dealer Training Tapes/Films
These Tapes/Films showed up at a Olds club picnic auction today. Thinking there are about 60 of them from the 80's. Does anybody know of a machine that can these dealer training tapes or films? We don't really even know if they are films or tapes, but I am thinking films. Does the REO Olds museum have a machine for them so they could be played. If so, they might be donated. I did see a listing on Ebay for some. They could be fun at the museum.

There is a machine that those played on. Think about the old VHS TV's. Be hard to find them but sure would be cool to see. Can you guess the size of the film? Side to side is the measurement. They look bigger than 8mm to me. Looks pretty late in the evolution of video tapes before VHS and Beta. I remember those at car dealerships and Schwinn bike shops. There are so many outlets to convert these films. I bet you have one locally. Cool stuff right there. Priceless honestly.

Just a little update on these tapes or films: We heard from Judy Bagly from the Olds Museum in Lansing that she will take these tapes as a donation which the Illinois Club will do, but now she needs a viewer or player for them. Somebody must know where one exists.

I have some 1985 Oldsmobile laser discs for sales training. Never saw them because I have no idea what kind of player would play them. Supposedly, Tim Allen is on one of the presentations hawking the new 85 Cutlass.
I almost forgot about them until this thread came up.

Those " tapes" are actually super 8 movie films .
They can be taken apart and played on a super 8 movie projector .
They also had a magnetic strip embedded in one side of the film , which provided the sound .
Unless the super 8 projector was also set up for sound , they will be " silent movies " .
There are super 8 projectors with sound on E-Bay .

Be aware Camera companies can scan these Super 8’s frame by frame and produce mpeg-4 or other kinds of movie files. But, yes, as Super 8’s, there won’t be an audio track. If there is a magnetic strip which contains audio, that can be extracted too.
For my parent’s Super 8’s from the 60’s-80’s it was several hundred dollars. Not sure what the per square foot cost is, but it’s worth knowing how many linear feet of movies there are to know what it would cost to transfer them to digital files.

If they've been in heat, they're probably fragile. The less handling by people that don't know what's up, the better. The problem is that people who deal with this stuff charge a lot for their services, so it's either that, or level up yourself to do it. The scanning, like mentioned above, is the best, but you'll need a fundraiser.
