date coded glass
I will have to replace all of my glass on my car as the original glass have scratches on them that will not come out. I would like to here feedback from anyone that has replaced any glass with date coded ones and were they got them and how do they compare to the originals.
your input is appreciated thanks ray

I think there is a company in Ohio that has PPG but I do not know where it's made.
Good luck finding all the glass Ray. Windshields can be had with a date code (extra $$). There are some NOS available side glass, however getting a day code near your build date will be difficult. Forget finding an NOS back glass, as they are not available, and no one is reproducing them like the W/S. Check with Iowa Glass. They are the biggest. I got my dated coded W/S from them, $225 for the glass and an extra $50 (total $275) for date code. I tried to replace all of the glass for my 70' F-85 about 20 yrs. ago and could only find the RR 1/4 glass. I got a glass polishing kit from Eastwood to try to remove scratches and it worked pretty good, but it was very messy! You might have better luck since yours is a hardtop. Good luck!
BTW: your glass should be LOF stamped and not PPG. Also, it depends on whether you have tinted green glass or clear. Tinted is easier to find!

If you want the dates and/or brand to match original stuff, you can sometimes find original glass in good condition. The exception would be the windshield which will probably be scratched and the tint discolored. I have hoarded LOF windshields I bought 30+ years ago for that reason. You might be able to find such stuff at old time glass shops, but as noted above most new stuff is from overseas.

I work for PPG, and we sold both our Automotive Original & Replacement Glass businesses in 2007. We couldn't make a windshield for the landed cost of glass from China. Private equity has made a go of it as Pittsburgh Glass Works.
In 2014 we sold a residential/commercial glass plant in Mt. Zion, IL to a Chinese outfit, Fuyao. They're going to retool to make automotive glass.
I'm glad that I make OEM paint.

I only know their Creighton, PA plant, which was Works One for PPG back in the 1880's. I did get a windshield for my '66 there, they probably still have the molds and make them. Google 'em.
I don't need no stinkin glass,I'm done.

will your date coded glass also have the correct plant code for your car? It might look a little odd if your Lansing built car (assuming you are referring to the 70 W-30) with correct date coded glass was made in the Lathrop, Calif plant.
also ECS Automotive offers date coded glass. I haven't used them though

I have recently installed glass from AutoCity. Decent glass, but is not cut well at the top edges, you can say it is wavy across the tops. The sides are the same way. The rear qtr glass is the same way. On the rear window, you can see green spots when the lighting is on it....and the glass thickness is almost 1/2 the thickness of original.
If you do go with them or any other supplier, and have the codes etched in the glass...do yourself a favor and photograph / detail / each individual piece. Note which direction the codes read, left to right, or right to left. And are the codes on the inside of the glass or outside of the glass....
We were given a piece of paper to record all this information on, supplied it to them, and it was not followed by their personnel. All the glass came back incorrect, and then they would NOT stand behind it. When we called to complain, there excuse was "we know what we are doing and do not need to follow the spec sheet" ...what a joke....I then sent photographs of the etchings from the original to what they supplied, and 3 of the 5 pcs were wrong...We ended up buying more glass from them to get it right. They only offered a partial discount even though they f..d up....
I don't think I would buy from them again, unless I really was desperate...
Just my 02 cents worth....good luck....

Ray just for giggles, what date code are you looking for, if you could post a pic of the door & qtr glass 'codes etc..' you need I would be interested to see if I might have any matches.

I'd go for a new windshield and backlight, and do the etching/sandblasting yourself. New glass shows so well. Something like this:

Unfortunately, I gotta believe that any new replacement glass is going to be marked by its manufacturer, to meet DOT regulations.

THANKS 69442murph this is the kind of information I am looking for, so If I speak with them before they date code anything, I want to know if they back up there work and products thanks
thanks ray
Yes,AS2 is for tempered glass and AS1 is for laminated glass. The windshield is laminated glass. I thought the 4 might be the plant code but couldn't find a list of plant codes. It would make sense that the glass plant used would be the closest to the assembly plant but not a guarantee.
yep, that's what I eluded to earlier
my 70 Pontiac, built in Fremont, CA has a windshield with a plant code of 10, Lathrope, Calif plant. The car was sold new in Pontiac, IL
here is some glass info, http://www.camaros.org/glass.shtml

WoW great info. I knew how to read the glass markings, however all the other info was very informative, thanks!
I did have at my desk a book on bulletins, updates, how to read the markings for both LOF and PPG. I do remember it did also include number codes where the glass was made I.E. plant location. Of course one of many files I did not take when I left. Who knew?
My 2 cents: I would only buy NOS or really good used glass. If your spending serious $$$ I would not use the current manufacturers especially those from China or those owned here in the USA. I would try the Eastwood Glass Polishing Kit first. I practiced on some glass before I did mine. Took out most of the noticeable scratches. I did replace my back glass with one that had fewer scratches and of course my W/S from Iowa Glass, date coded. I never had points deducted for my glass condition. My car had the AO2 option, which was "Windshield, Soft-Ray Tinted". All other glass was non-tinted. Tinted glass is easier to find. Is all of your glass tinted? I have several sets of tinted door and 1/4 glass from southern hardtop cars, so they are in pretty nice condition. Don't know the dates. Most came from Lansing built cars.
Good luck with the glass thing Ray!
