Data Plate Date code 1971

The date code on my '71 Cutlass SX is 06D072. I understand the 6 is for June & the D is for 4th week. What is the 072?

That is just manifest numbers that Arlington, Fremont, Linden and a few other plants used that pertain to the build and will appear on the build sheet but have no significant data tied to it. Sometimes you see two groups of six numbers at the bottom of the body tag. 4th week of June '71 is a fairly late build.

Thanks for the info. I talked to the original owner the other day, & he remembers the first time he laid eyes on the car. I have the original Protect-O-Plate card, owners manual & warranty brochures in their original plastic sleeve. It has stamped & typed on the warranty that the car was sold on July 26th, so the car was only a month old when sold.

You are quite welcome. One would think that this was a customer order car, being this late of a build. 4-6 weeks from the month/week stamp on the cowl tag seems to be the norm for build time and shipping to it's final destination.

My '72 has 06A on the cowl tag and was delivered to the dealer on July 10. It was a special request/customer order by my Grandfather.

Scot, not sure how you're tying late production to a customer ordered car. Did I miss something? There's absolutely nothing I can see that's really unique on the cowl tag to suggest that.

According to the first owner, he went to the dealership & they had it on the showroom floor. I bet it was pretty enticing with the Viking Blue paint w/ White top & int.

Al, I meant it would seem as if it were a customer order not special request order or dealer stock replenish because of it's late build. There are certainly other reasons that would vouch for the late build but either the dealer ordered it viking blue with a white top or another customer ordered it and bailed would be my guess. And that's just it. A guess
