Cutlass supply seems to be drying up

Man! I havn't seen a decent parts car for sale in my area for over three months. I need to find another 68-72 A-Body fast. I have nothing to do and I'm getting bored. LOL

I had the same discussion at the recent annual Olds car show. We didn't have very many 68-72 Cutlasses in the show this year (maybe 4) and someone commented that they are all being used as donor cars for 442 restorations and in the near future there may not be any left.

Don't see many around here, either. The first year or two I was following them (2013/2014) there was usually at least one for sale. Now I go months without seeing one unless it's a premium priced restoration.

Don't see any in vegas but I search California Craigslist and there's generally one or two in Southern California. I picked up a 1970 supreme in San Pedro a few months back. Pictures in my album with more to follow. Needs work but it's a lifetime California car.

These cars haven't been built in half a century. The supply will only get smaller.

And everyone that is boned out means there is one less.

While Joe's logic is true I've found that there are always Cutlii projects available in my area. Maybe I'm just not old enough to realize that the supply has dwindled.

I'm also guessing more cars than in the past that would be sold as donor cars are sitting in garages waiting for that day they will be restored. What once was considered a rust bucket is now considered salvageable. I can only image how many half way decent W30s were junked. When an 8 grand car needed 10 grand of work it was left on the side of the road. Today that W30 most likely would at least break even for the new owner or provide enough enjoyment to make it worth the restoration.

I also bet folks are sitting on cars thinking they are worth way more than they are with all these TV shows showing top dollar "barn finds"

Look at the Cutlass I just got, it was sitting in the guys garage for 5 years waiting to be worked on, he did some stuff, bought some stuff, planned on some stuff but in the end was never enough of a priority to get it going. I understand and I am glad he realized it quicker than most. I have seen some cars sitting in garages for decades now that have never seen the light of day "waiting to be restored."

A lot of truth there. My '70 was in a storage locker for 20 years and was never advertised. My '72 was stored for over 18 years. You never know what's hiding in that old shed tucked in the back of a well hidden piece of property.

I'm finding the same thing with VWs...the advertised supply has really dwindled, but the cars are still out there. Mostly under cover and out of sight.

I know of a few 68-72 Cutlasses in my area that are stored away while the owners figure out what they're gonna do with them.

I think what we're seeing extends to most types of these cars, and the ones parked in a backyard/field rotting are quickly disappearing into the earth.

There's quite a few up in Alberta. Seems nobody wants to make the trip to look.

Ther are a nice few here in Canada, mostly projects are being put up for sale now its spring. But the price tag says come with you pockets full and your wallet bulging. The prices are insane here.
I guess they just figure its like money in the bank for now. If someone gives them the price they sell, if not it sits. But,.. Space is getting expensive up here in Toronto LOL, even if parked in the garage of your 1.2k home.
The taxes alone for the garage space/the back of property is coming off the value over the years as the taxes keep going way up.
From the cheap seats !!

The four doors sometimes need to sit on the market for a while before the seller comes down to earth regarding the price, or in other words, that a four door is typically worth a lot less than an equal quality two door.

I know TX is a big state but like Eric mentioned above, I see project worthy Cutlii on CL EVERY DAY around Dallas and Houston.

I'm looking for project cars and parts cars within three hours of home. If I go to far outside this circle it becomes extremely hard to break even when I sell off the car or parts. And because over the last three years I have successfully rounded up almost everything I need for my 442 so I can't justify buying a car unless there is a potential to make a little.

I hear that. Unless you are looking for a new project which you plan on keeping for the long run it wouldn't be financially savvy to purchase something half way across the nation.

That's the problem right there. That's a restoration candidate, not a parts car. One just like that just sold for $200K and Barret Jackson. Only difference it was a W30 convertible
