Cutlass did not die today

I can now confidently state that my ignition cut out was the result of a bad capacitor, after dying twice I could find no other problem with the ignition and replaced the condensor, today was the first chance I had to drive the car for some time and distance, no problems. Car ran much further and longer than the two times it died (driven twice died twice). Now I carry a spare since quality condensors are getting more difficult to get. I can now tear up the pavement and polute the atmosphere for a few more weeks until her winter slumber, come spring I will probably convert to pertronix.

Sounds like you found the problem.
Electronic parts are notarious of failing when hot.
The points and condenser system is very simple and reliable most of the time.
Yes carry a spare set and you are good to go.
I am thinking of changing to an stock look electronic system, but only after my point give me trouble, aside from an ocasional misfire. Engine idles so smooth I have to look at the tach to see if it is still running...

I've had few problems with points ignition systems in my cars but I've had two condensors die within two years, both with diferent symptoms. From other posts it seems that condensors are junk compared to what we used to be able to get. I have two good sets of points, Blue Streak are in there now.

I agree with the lessening quality of things now - irritating to say the least! I have an old yard edger from 1967 with original ignition system - even the spark plug. The carb was rebuilt but aside from that, it always ran good!
Capacitors usually failed from old age (30 years or so), but the newer ones have even shorter life due to their smaller sizes.

The actual capacitor inside the can is no bigger than a pencil erasor, the film and foils can clearly be seen. The can is not sealed the way it should be.

Hence the reasons why they do not last as long any more.
The smaller sizes are less tolerant to high heat, unless they were made to mil spec, which I really doubt.
Smaller size often equals shorter life. Like I always believe, every new advantage has a tradeoff.
