Cooling questions

1970 442 wannabe with a Rocket 350
My engine runs a bit warm.....230ish and I was curious.

First question
I don't have a fan shroud. Obviously it's needed to keep the engine cooler.
I'm just curious how much cooler it would keep the engine with the shroud.
Speculations obviously.....??

Second question
I'm in the market for a much better radiator. I'm going to an electric fan setup and wanted to purge the age old rad I have in there now. I'm looking for the best option that's not going to rape the bank here. My car is a street cruiser, not a drag car. It's looking at under 400hp now. I might go up to 500hp with a bigger motor later on down the road.

What are some of you modified guys running ?? I want to be able to take it on long Power tour cruises....that's the goal here.

a shroud is a MUST. I always had overheating issues when I ran without one. as soon as I put a shroud on the car I almost never got over 200 degrees. then I swapped in a 4 core unit and it has never gone past 200.

try a shroud before spending any real cash. You might be suprised.

Make sure the rubber seal from rad support to bumper is there, too. It will help in highway cooling.
If it runs that hot on the highway, a fan shroud may not be the answer. It will only help when the fan is providing all of the cooling air (low speed and idle).
Are you running a clutch fan?

Yes. It gets that hot driving it around town, not on the highway.

I've been debating the fan shroud , or just bumping up to an electric fan. (Taurus)
I already have the fan, the controller, I just need the 80 amp solenoid.

I already have a 140amp alternator in there as well ready.
But now I want to install 2 stereo amps and those suck juice too.
So I'm debating what to do here.

For the radiator I'm looking into the newer styled 3 core aluminum one's.

i paid $160 +tax for an all aluminum 2 row, from my local radiator shop, it cooled me down a good 10 degrees from stock. i run a clutch fan with a shroud + aluminum water pump and have never gone over 205 freeway or long cruise. she stays about 180 around town (even long cruises) but she gets up to the 200 after about 15-20 min on the freeway then gradually comes back down 180-190

Do the ol' "wind in your hair" test on the clutch fan.
When it is hot, it better be roaring and be blowing your hair all around.
If not, it is freewheeling and not helping much. I had this problem before and a new clutch solved it.
The factory fan worked great when it worked.
Yes, you need the shroud to pull the air through the radiator and not from in front of it.

Fan shroud makes a big difference in cooling. If you need one I have one for a 70-72 Cutlass for $25 plus shipping.
