6x9", bolts in inside of the deadspace next to the top well behind the back seat - pull the seatback, and you'll see the outlines.
You can't hear the speakers for $__t in that location, but that's where they go.
Rob has a very nice writeup on putting a set in the back seat armrest area.

The original set-up only had one rear speaker, mounted behind the seat on the passenger side.
From my own experience, the rear speaker works good when the top is up but, when the top is down, you can't hear it at all. That's the main reason I put an AM-FM mono in my '68 instead of a stereo. When I put the top down, I just shift the balance **** completely to the front speaker and get all the sound. With the stereo unit, you only get half the sound with the top down and you can't do anything about it.

Thanks Eric - You saved me some time!
I used special low-profile 6.5" speakers that cleared the top cylinders well. Unfortunately, that model line of speaker I used was discontinued, but I have seen others out there in different brands.
And yes, even with an amp and sealing off that rear triangle support, the sound is still quite muffled from the 2 6x9's...

I think when I measured it you need a speaker with a depth of less than 1-1/2" to clear the cylinder. I went through all the 4" & 5" speakers at Crutchfield and none of them worked. I even call there and they told me they didn't have anything that shallow without building it out

Okay, for all you guys who want rear armrest speakers, here are the ones you need!
http://www.amazon.com/PLS60-6-5-Inch.../dp/B00022OBPG
I used these. Cheap but they work well. These clear the top cyls by about 1/4".
These are discontinued by the mfr, so get 'em while you can!
(In fact maybe I should get a spare set........)
