Classic Vehicle VIN Search

I'm looking for my first vehicle I had in HS, a 1968 *cough* excuse me...Ford F100 Truck.

I have the VIN, but these VIN sites don't like older cars. The DMV won't give up the info unless you're the owner or law enforcement...understandably so.

I have the VIN. I know the general area, NE OK. I've just hit a dead end as far as pinpointing it. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Rhett

There's a reason why that info is not readily available. How would you feel if a prior owner of one of your cars was able to easily find you? What if that person had "issues"? What if they wanted the car back (one way or another)?

Which is why I said "The DMV won't give up the info unless you're the owner or law enforcement...understandably so."

Thanks for the scolding reply, but I'm not looking for a nefarious backdoor method to finding this vehicle. I'm just curious if there are any other resources.

If you have a mid 80's or later VIN, then I could probably find one's life story online if I was motivated to do so. With classic cars, it's a bit tougher

Carfax and similar services only accept 17 character VINs from 1981-up, and really only give you information on things like accidents and smog inspections. I don't know that they provide the owner contact info you are looking for anyway. Frankly, this is DMV info. Not sure how someone other than the DMV would have it.

contact a private investigator there are some that specialize in the process.

in missouri, you apply for a license pay a fee and after a back ground check, you can run the VINs thru the state for restoration service type things..

a friend does it for me...i had an orange 400 Firebird vert, and i wanted its history because it was a giveaway car new and wanted to know more...i got a copy of every time it was registered from new to the guy i bought it from..only in missouri..if it leaves state the timeline breaks

I called the first owner, which was still alive in my old neighborhood!!! unreal, but he was so happy the car was alive etc...he had the same phone number from 1969 to the late 90s and never moved either..he was in the phone book...i used a google search to find him..but he was in the white pages..i was surprised

told me everything i wanted to know..and the PHS confirmed it all..i just wanted to do it

PHS is a service offered for pontiacs, you pay a fee, supply the VIN and they send a pic of the billing history which are options, like GTO or 400 firebird etc..

in Indiana, a registered car dealer can run a VIN, and get some info..to apply for a title or to trace history..ive had it done but 14 years ago

same in Kentucky...so its there, its available..ive had it done about 12 years ago

in illinois they have title services you pay for, they run the VIN and get some history of the car, and they can apply for the car..ive had it done about 10 years ago

in kansas they can go back so far if youre a dealer or registered with the state...i recently did it

you just have to seek out the info to who can legally do it...unfortunately, kansas, and other states are purging everything 35 years or older...some 20..get busy..it could be gone..

Ive lived all over the midwest...i get transfered from time to time for work..now i am in Kansas, and Im done moving

In Texas for a small fee (less than $10) you can pull a vehicle search. I don't know all of the info provided but it's independent companies not part of the state. The links to their sites are listed on TXDMV's website. Perhaps there are similar services for Oklahoma
