Changing from Chrome remote mirror to sport mirror

1970 442 Chrome driver's door mirror with remote - are the holes the same if I want to change to 1970 sport mirrors?
Want to add one to the passenger door & I don't like the look of the chrome remote mirror with a standard pass side mirror. Backing into my garage w/out it is a real bitch

Following along, I want to do this with mine. I have some nice 72 units.
I was wondering if the back side steel mounts that fit in the inside of the
upper door along with the gaskets are the same for the 70 sport mirrors.

I'm 99% sure they're the same. But its been a lot of years since I pulled a factory sport mirror from a door. I do have that door still, so if nobody confirms it first I'll take some pictures of that to compare.

I've got a 1971 flat top wagon I plan to do this with. Years ago I cut up a 4 door car and removed the portion of the door where the extra supports were for the chrome remote mirror. I'm thinking that's the safest method to assure the passenger door has enough support behind the mirror.

Agreed! Now if we could find someone to share the proper mounting template
to cut the right size holes and in the right places for the doors.
That would make mounting the under side pieces a breeze.

I made a template by using the blue painters tape. Remove the driver side mirror and tape from the edge of the door and over the holes. Use a Sharpie to mark the holes. Now go to the right side door and flip the tape over and you will have a mirror image of the driver side door. When you flip the tape over (sticky side) I apply another strip of tape so it wont get sticky while you measuring and drilling. I hope this helps.

Tanks for that Eli. The only problem is I don't know if the template would be
the same for the chrome mirrors vs. the sport mirrors. Are they?

From what I've been told, its the same. But to make sure, if you have the chrome and sport mirror, line them up together to see if they match

I believe ELY442 is correct. Same mounting holes for both standard chrome and sport mirror

They are the same.

Be sure to get the reinforcement for the passenger door.

Thanks, that is what I need to know. I really can't stand driving w/out the pass side mirror.

That's awesome, thanks for posting. We do need one more piece of information, however. Pick a reference dimension on the template and tell us what it is. That will allow us to scale the print-out correctly. The two hole diameters aren't really accurate enough. Consider one of the long straight sides and tell us that measurement. Thanks.

Aaargh, I can't find my original.

I think it may have been passed along with a mirror I recently traded!
How about taking a measurement of the mirror screws and scale it according to that?? I'll keep looking.

My did this to his '71 Cutlass convertible that my nephew now has. I wasn't present when it was done, but he said the driver's side was a direct bolt-up and the manual passenger side mirror was easy as well.

Thank you droptopron for asking this question and thank you Tom442 for the installation information. I am also changing my 72 442 from a single chrome mirror to dual sport mirrors and appreciate the templates. I am wondering if you or anyone else can tell me where to cut/install the driver's side remote mirror control in the door panel? Thanks. Jim
