Carpet Fitment

A while back there were several threads discussing the topic of poorly fitting carpet. It was probably close to a couple of years ago. The consensus seemed to be that the fit was decent everywhere but over the driveshaft tunnel. I experienced this myself when I put new carpet in my '71 442. Unfortunately it's a bench seat car and pretty much impossible to hide how tall the carpet is over the driveshaft tunnel. At least with a console car you cut a little relief slit and get rid of most of the issue and then cover the rest with the console.

I wanted to see if anything has changed recently? Has anyone found a better fitting carpet kit? Also, the Parts Place is selling a new carpet set they call MASS backed. Has anyone had any experience with this one?

Thanks

Funny you would bring this up today as I was about to post the same question. I tried to take up some of the poor fit by adding additional insulation, but in the process screwed up the travel of my accelerator pedal. Hopefully someone will chime in and shed some light on this.

The only experience I have with ordering online with made-to-fit carpets is through Stock Interior and that was with a Ford Explorer and it fit beautifully. I want to replace the carpet in my 1969 Cutlass S and considering on trying them again.

Last week I tore out the old and replaced it with the MASS backed from Parts Place......BTW it comes straight from the manfacturer.....2-3 weeks. About 10 years ago I installed one of the ones you discussed.....poor fitting over the hump....I hated it from day one....this one fits really well....a lot of trimming around the edges..the quality is much better, both density and the rubber backing...the mass backing is really heavy, but doesn't affect the fit. I do have buckets and console....no relief cuts, just a slit for the shifter

I purchased a carpet with regular backing from "Stock interiors" (doesn't really matter who as they don't make the carpet themselves) It was an ACC brand and if fit very well. I have a bench seat 70. I will say this, i use a bit of spray adhesive when i do carpets to get them to fit tight. They are not just a drop in perfect type of thing to start with.
