Normally the numbers in the area of the 2503 are used to identify a date code. Following the normal sequence of these numbers, that code would reveal a date code of the 250th day of 1973 which would not match at all for a 1970 carb. I don't know if it's the photo that is making the numbers look this way, but it looks like the numbers may have been tampered with, possibly even an attempt made to restampt it with the numbers you see. I may be wrong, but the stamping depth and shape of the numbers
appears to be inconsistent.

If it was on there in 1980, I'd guess it's a factory service replacement carb. They'd have still made them application-specific for a 1970 engine in 1973.

Agreed. No one was restamping stuff like this in 1980. Not even Corvette people.

It is definitely a factory service replacement carb. Note the lack of the two-letter broadcast code, as well as a 1973 date code. I had the same deal on my '70 GTO and actually thought for awhile that the factory had mis-stamped the year in the date code as the numbered day of the year would have been consistent with the build date of my car. I later found out about service replacements. Your service replacement carb number 7040258 is definitely correct for a 1970 W-30 with and automatic transmission, and this carb was built on the 250th day of 1973.

i'll second this. a dealer actually took the time to stamp the numbers into the carb.
