That's the pivot point for the z-bar for a 3-speed/4-speed clutch. Obviously, a 400 didn't originally come in a Toro in the first place let alone a SMT setup...

I think he is talking about the part next to the pivot, as he mentioned the pivot in his first post he obviously knows what it is. I've often wondered what that extra hole was for.

It would be easier to be sure what he was talking about if he'd taken a picture of the engine, instead of the engine stand.

Also not used on a Toro since the Toro starter bolts to the bellhousing on the passenger side.

All right, then apparently you WERE asking about the pivot ball, not the hole next to it. So as you can see from the assembly manual pic I posted, it's for a SM application only. Apparently someone is messing with you or this engine was transplanted from some standard trans car because it wasn't original to a Toro motor

As I said earlier, we still can't tell what he is talking about, due to the lack of clarity of both the picture and the prose.

Quality of internet responses reflects the old computer saying: "GIGO"

more than likely transplanted as the seller was selling other stuff from the same car... fenders, bumpers other Tornado stuff. possibly pulled out but not original as you say. thanks

I admit that I was also confused by the initial writing. Going over it again I see:

"400G pulled from a '68 Toro. "
====================
Aha, the engine in the photos is a 400G, recently, but obviously not ORIGINALLY from a '68 Toronado...

"i have a few other Olds big blocks laying around here
all the other big blocks were pulled out of the cars by me.
2 [of the] 455's have an empty threaded hole in that location of the block."
==============
(Picture with arrow pointing to a z-bar pivot ball)
I was confused here because I read the first bit in a hurry and did not slow down to put "G400" and "pulled from a Toro" in perspective. I (like others) went on to figure he must be talking about that small protruding boss that the starter brace goes to, as seen in the factory line drawing above.

400E i have also has threaded hole in the same location.
can someone tell me what this (pivot ball thingy pointed to in the photo) is for??? ...
location of the pivot ball is drivers side of block by the trans
=================
Very few pre-1977 blocks DO NOT have a threaded hole there. Very late production 455's and things made after 1976 I believe.
Few blocks still bear the MT pivot ball as shown- well, few compared to the vast numbers of Auto Trans engines out there.

So, to summarize, it must be a Manual Trans G400, pretty certainly not from a Vista therefore, and thus almost certainly from a '68-9 442.

Please check the VIN stamp [see threads here for the graphics showing where to find that] and let us know. If I could find THE engine my car came with I would be very happy.
