This can be an expensive hobby

Four headlights, 2 hood adjusters/bumpers, 4 seat back bumpers, 6 trunk bumpers.
$244.00, shipping included.
I have no intention of saying anything negative about the vendor, I like them, good service, good parts, good all around. But this seems rather expensive, I guess it is just the times.
Rant over.

Mike

It is expensive. Look for deals when you can find them. I scan craigslist daily but not too many Oldsmobiles in Kansas.

Ahhh- I see the problem- it was the overpriced T-3 headlights you had to have at about $160

Its like looking at a grocery store shopping list, individually the parts don't look too bad, $20.00 here, $30.00 for that item etc. and before you know it, your up to $300 - $400.00 bucks and that is after pairing things down to a minimum. Then for me in Canada, its higher shipping and taxes and before you know it you got a $500.00 order. When you look at it all, it's in this little box and you give your head a shake and say I hope this is all worth it. Boys being boys though, we repeat the same thing again. Very expensive hobby is an understatement, but we love it, and in the end you got to have a passion.

Supply and demand. With Cutlass parts the demand is high so there is a lot of repro available but not so much with the big car stuff. If you need something and only one place has it you have to pay the price! With my Starfire I have been happy that so many parts are available at all after recent experiences with Lincoln and Packard cars where the stuff is just not there...

The only way I can do it is by doing 90- 95% of the labor myself. Then there are the months where I spend 500$ + , install the parts in a day or 2, then have to wait the rest of the month so I can do it again. Real tough if you pay someone to do it, but even if I had the money for that I wouldn't enjoy the hobby. Just how I am.

Exactly. Let's keep our wits about us here.

The purchase included 12 rubber bumpers of various types. Those all together cost somewhere in the $50 to $60 dollar range, I'm guessing. The vast majority of the cost of this order is the four T-3 headlights, and their cost should be a surprise to no one. You don't have to put T-3's on a car to drive it. Four Sylvania headlights for a '66 Cutlass at Autozone are about $45 total. Yes, it can be an expensive hobby, but there are ways to keep the cost down.

Its why I drive a 20 year old truck every day. Not having a truck payment makes it a lot easier to buy parts.

My wife's 2.2l 2005 Malibu's front brake rotors are several hundred bucks each from the stealership. $70+ for the NAPA cheapies ...$40 each from Advance just over the border. Nothing worth having is cheap anymore.

You're lucky you can jump over the border to get stuff like that Professur. I have to bundle as much stuff as I can to justify shipping from US to AB and as you know it's skyrocketed cross border in the past few years.

Even shipping in Canada is getting price stupid. Fortunately I can save a bit with my CP VentureOne card. That still doesn't get me any deals on the receiving end though.

Most of the time shipping isn't included! Sucks when you need a decal or clip for 3.99 and shipping is 7.99

That's pricey for sure, it never hurts to shop around tho I just priced those parts from a vendor and they totaled under$200. That said if your happy w your vendor of choice that's important as well

There is one vendor we all know and for the most part respect but they do like their $3.00 handling charge and shipping charges. If you are buy some big ticket items it doesn't seem too bad. But if you are buying just a few small pieces and say it is under $50.00, it becomes a bigger percent of your order. I still buy from them and think they do a good job but I try to wait till it all adds up to a little more. Yes this is an expensive hobby. Including shipping each way, I am spending about $500 to have the treadle vac rebuilt for my 54 Olds. Brakes are not something to take a chance on so I will not complain. I often think if we did not have the internet, what would se do. We would rely on Hemmings and other publications.
