California License Plates Oldsmobile Olds 442
Not mine. These plates were sold once on eBay for $85. The new owner has now put them up for sale. Check out the asking price.

Unless they are your initials whats the big deal? Black plates are kinda cool, personalized 442 plates are, too. However, I don't live in CA, so I couldn't run them on my classic car, my initials definitely aren't those, so they are of no use to me. I wish the seller good luck and maybe all the stars will align. P.S. They have been for sale for a little while.

These are from the days before personalized plates (in Ca. anyway) I live in Ca., and unless somebody knows something I don't, I don't think you can legally use these on your car. They probably would get bought by a collector since they look to be in pretty good shape. Chumley

You can run them on your car if the dmv allows it and there is no one else with those plates. I had called the dmv as I have the black and yellow plates as well but they're not on my car. the dmv charges 20 dollars a year to have year correct plates on.

No matter to me, 'cause I'm as far from Cali as I can get, but I was under the impression that to use black plates, you had to be able to prove that the plates you want to use were the original plates on your car.
Maybe that's changed.

My black plate came with my car (only one though). I'm the third owner.

You can run the plates as long as they still aren't registered in CA. The plates stayed with the car and if the car is still registered you can't use them. I think the cars come off the books after so long though? The original CA plates that were taken off before the car was was sold and left the state then is bought later and comes back are the ones that bring the huge bucks.
I have the original blue and yellow CA plates for mine, must be an inch of renewal stickers on the back one.
I won't use my 1971 Ohio YOM plate because it's the same yellow as the drunk driver party plates that judges issue in court and I don't want to draw too much attention to myself.

Those plates more than likely came off a 68 or so car. My 66 has the original black plates on it still and they start with RVS. My buddies 65 has them as well and his start with NOA. At about 1970, they switched over to the blue and yellow, but some 1970 could still have the black, I've seen both.

I got yom plates for my car back about 10 or so years ago when Ontario said we could use them. A lot of plates I bought were attached to something else, so it was a lot of trial and error. The plates I got have a very different sequence its 44-61L.

I own three CA personalized plates: for my 1970 442, - Blue and Gold 1970 W30 purchased in 1977 and then 442 70 and 70 442. Our DMV has never purged the plates so if they are sold once and fall out of the system they are gone forever. Would be interesting to see the plates of the members of our group. Lee

It's too bad CA charges annually to put YOM plates on a collector vehicle. In Washington, all you need is one old plate for the back (not necessarily era-correct but an older plate issued any time after your car was built) and they charge a flat rate of $44 to change your collector car to the old plate. No annual charge after that. The car has to be at least 30 years old to be considered a collector car. I understand Oregon is similar except that the car has to be at least 25 years old.
I also understand CA is very particular about what the Department of Licensing says is correct for your car (i.e., you could buy a set of what you consider YOM plates for your car, take them to DoL, and DoL says they are not correct for your car and you can't use them, with no recourse after that for those plates and your car). That sucks because DoL isn't always right about that.
WA and OR will probably figure out (more sooner now than later because of budget deficits) they are not making that much money on collector car owners and will start gaffing us, too.
Oh, my plates? I have both - they are the plates WA issued to my dad when he moved to WA in 1971. They are not YOM plates but I've kept them on the car for obvious reasons, but converted to "collector" status so I don't have to pay the annual tab fee.

In Illinois you can use any state plate on your car if it is registered as an antique as long ad those plates were issued the year your car was made. 70 Illinois plates were a bright yellow with red lettering (YUK) so I put on Michigan plates from 70, though they don't say anything special - I'm ok with that.

My 70 F250 has the original black and yellow plates, the rear has that stack of stickers, the front one is a real nice plastic replica the previous owner had made at Pomona years ago,the metal one is under the seat! The same guy sent me a set of Calif 1937 plates and a title and vin plate for a 37 Chevy pickup he was parting. The vin tag is just held on with screws.I have used them here in Vermont, just for fun at cruise nights. Not too legal, but fun. ---bil

I understand that a few 1970 vehicles early in the production year got the old black and yellow plates before CA shifted to the blue and yellow plates. I'm guessing your '70 F250 is an early production 1970 model. I saw an '70 Olds Cutlass in the Oakland hills back around 1990 that had black and yellow plates as well.
