A/C trouble shooting help
Hi all,
Had my 76 cutlass salon A/C "fixed" last year. Decided to stay with R12 as I've had bad luck with 134 conversions. This year uses a VIR (valve in receiver) which is a special beast and cannot be recalibrated for R134, and I like original stuff - so I bought a restored VIR on ebay from someone in Florida (seemed legit). Evaporator leaked so bought a new one and installed.
During the first fix the condenser was plugged up so the shop flushed it out. Said good flow after flush. They sent me home with 60 degree vent temps. I wasn't happy but worn out from the experience, so I let it go.
Now attempting a second round of fixes. A/C is still 60 degrees but also blowing the fusible link up by the compressor after ~15 minutes of operation. Small line from evaporator was icing up prior to fuse blowing - but the large pipe running from VIR to evaporator seemed room temp or so. Today shop was worried about hot water shut off,. but I just confirmed good vacuum at max A/C and I tested the valve about a year ago when I had the intake manifold off.
Any thoughts on likely causes or next steps? Compressor appears original.
Thanks!
