Buzzing noise underneath dash, Gen light on/of
This is on my 1965 Olds Cutlass. The generator light came on while doing an "exercise" run with the car, and a weird noise was heard under the dash. I returned to my shop, shut the car off the restarted it and the light went out. After a minute or two idling the light came on again and volt meter test revealed it was not charging. I replaced the voltage regulator and alternator(since everything else is new). The result is when the car idles the GEN light comes on and I hear a noise under the dash under the area below where the GEN is (area of wiper switch). The noise sounds like a sick cat or a buzzer. The lights also flicker. When the engine speeds up the light goes off noise stops. The buzzing sick cat noise also happened during the exercise run but it was really hard to find out where it came from. I thought someone might know what this is so I can get an idea of what to look for or someone that had the same issue. Thanks. My car was in the JWO: The Gunners Cutlass
This isn't the first time I've solved problems like this. Back off and go away from the problem. There are not any buzzers or cats under there. Get a drink. Therefore the buzzing is due to bad connection ie. lights flickering, draw of power causing volt reg. to go crazy but the gen light would go off when the engine revved because increased voltage/amps better completed the circuit, and vibration of the car decreased. It's like I failed a little detail and it caught up with me. I have tried to be SO CAREFULL with the electrics being clean, use dielectric grease, neat soldering, etc. Live and learn!!!!
