build dates, W-455 OLDSMOBILE... OLDS intakes

i was looking at build dates on the two W-30s. one is 5th week October 69 and the other is 2nd week November 69. both cars came with OLDSMOBILE on the aluminum intakes. one intake is 09-22-69 and the other is 09-24-69. the cars are 2 weeks apart and the intakes are 2 days apart. i am assuming they made many intakes in a shorter amount of time than the cars? i am also wondering if anyone knows a close cut off date for a W-30 to come with the OLDSMOBILE intake over the OLDS intake? i have read about this here before but i can't find it.

I sold an "Oldsmobile" one with a casting date of 11/12/69 but I'm pretty sure there is a casting date in early December too. I'm pretty sure I saw a post from 507Olds that said that too.

I just recently sold a '70 W30 intake with the "OLDS" logo dated 12/19/69. That may very well have been from the first run (or certainly an early run) of the new mold. For what it's worth, I'm not sure it actually was a new mold but rather a repaired original one. When you look closely at the area where the rest of the logo "MOBILE" was, it looks like it was just rather crudely filled in and smoothed over.

Eric,

From my notes

Cars built after 3 Jan 70 should have the OLDS W-455 intake. The "Oldsmobile W30" was the 1970 intake date coded up to about 12-12-69.

The OLDS W455 intakes were started in December/69.I think the earliest that I had,was 12/9/69.Everything that I have had from late-November & earlier were the full word OLDSMOBILE W455.

One of my W30's was built the 3rd week of December, and has a 9/19/69 intake.Everything is original to that car.7040256 UA 3179,1111977 9G21,block cast the 325th day of 69,one F-head dated 211 & one dated 295. I have also seen other cars with different dates of heads, but most have matching dates. One of my others has matching 261's.
F-head dates are 211,261,295,336,and 051(1970). There might be another late date of 105(1970).

My guess would be that it is the first run or first date that the OLDS W455 intakes were cast,in order for it to make it on your car in late December. What is your block dated?330's? Heads?I would say the 261's or 295's.

I plan on pulling to top half of the engine this fall and rebuilding the heads. At that time I will be able to get the casting dates of the heads and manifold.

The 336th day is right around December 1st,so they pulled those cookies right from the oven, and began machining & installing them onto your engine.I've seen dates vary from 14 days to 45 days, from the time they are cast,to the time they are installed onto a car. They could be a little quicker,or a little longer, depending on the demand & availability, and if they had to be shipped from another plant, etc.
I have also found that the cranks are usually close,if not the same day as the blocks. My January W30 has a 357 block, and a 357-dated crank.I just stripped a block this weekend that was 52 and 52.Last month,I did one that was 280 and 292,so they aren't always the same, but real close.

I am looking forward to seeing what the manifold is dated when I tear down the top end.

OK, I reviving this old thread with new information. My car was built the last week of Dec 69. I had thought my OLDS W-455 intake was original to the car. However, when I pulled the manifold this week, I found it is dated 2-10-70. Obviously it is not original to the car. I have owned this car since 1978, it is a real W-30 and the other engine components are correctly dated. I wonder if the original manifold was replaced under warranty service.

Are there any known original cars built in 1969 with the OLDS manifold? If not, does anyone want to trade an OLDSMOBILE for an OLDS manifold?

I have a 12/4/1969
"Olds 445" intake so here is a little bit of an older one than discussed.

Thanks for posting it. It is nice collecting this kind of data. This is also why this forum is so much more important than Facebook Olds groups. All the facebook data will be lost

Mine was cast on 2-2-70 and the body tag is a 2C build date (the firewall was crayoned with a big "051").
