Big Oldsmobile auction in Wisconsin, the estate of jhoppeolds
I know many of you guys knew him as jhoppeolds, his given name was John Hoppe and he was a close friend of mine. He passed away about a year and a half ago, leaving a massive collection of cars and car parts, lots of big Oldsmobile V8 stuff (he was really into 65-70 full size cars, but it's not limited to that) as well as Buick nailhead and some early Hemi bits, 3 and 4 speed stick transmissions and tons of stick parts, boxy 60's bucket seats, Snap-on tools and all kinds of good bits to build cars with and/or resell. It's been a really big job, but his sister and brother in law, who have been the executors of his estate, have been really good about not just scrapping everything, so some of his friends got together and we've been working on setting this up for a year and a half. Just trying to find a home for all this stuff so it doesn't end up in the dumpster, there's a lot of really cool stuff here. The auction company will ship stuff all over if the item is of a reasonable size.

Inspection day is tomorrow, Wednesday the 19th and it ends on Monday the 24th.
I know he really loved this site and talked about it quite a bit, and while I haven't been a member until today, he has asked questions here on my behalf in the past and gotten answers and I really do appreciate that. I don't have any real "skin in the game" here, I'm just a fellow old car builder and one of John's friends, and I wanted to get the word out about this auction in case any of his fellow Oldsmobile fans wanted a shot at any of it. His sister and brother in law are keeping his '66 Dynamic 88 convertible and his 70 Delta 88 ex squad car, plus a collection of parts and memorabilia (which I'm glad they're going to keep), but the rest of it has to go.
I'll try to check back in here a couple times before the auction ends, if there are any questions I can answer, but otherwise you can contact the auction company about shipping and pickup times and all that.

I'd noticed he hadn't been on here in a while but didn't know he had passed. Condolences on the loss of your friend and his knowledge will certainly be missed here.
I'm pleased his stuff will be auctioned off properly and his legacy will last.

Just asking since you may have an inside track. I contacted the auction house and they are adament pickup of stuff is that Wednesday and Thursday ONLY. Unfortunately I still work and while I can head up after work on Thursday, it’s roughly a 10 hour drive one way so I couldn’t be there until Friday morning. Any chance you can reach out to the family to see if Friday is a possibility? I’m not sure why the auction house would pick midweek to clear out the stuff but it is what it is. I’m guessing bumpers, trans and such would not constitute easily shippable. Regards Pat McMillan

Pat, I hope you can make arrangements. If you're able to get some of John's stuff, I can't think of a better place for it. That way the stuff is in the hands of someone who'll catalog it and keep it available.
As a full-size guy myself, that's important. Too many people bought out dealership inventories and threw the big car stuff in the dump.

Definitely that’s the idea Glenn. Drives me crazy when they do these things during the week. It’s also the reason why I haven’t made a concert in god knows how long cause I can’t work AND make a 7PM show on a Tuesday from living in the sticks.🤬

Finding good homes for all of this stuff is the reason we've been working on this cleanup job for the last year and a half, so we don't want something like scheduling to get in the way. I think we can figure it out.

Won't make the auction because I'm a bit of a hike away, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate what you and the executors are doing to maintain access to this stuff for enthusiasts. I'm sure there are lot of items there that might not be found elsewhere, so it's really good to see the effort being made to get them into the hands of responsible custodians. I didn't know John, but feel sure he would be pleased if he knew what you're doing.

If possible, could you PM me the sisters #? I haven't gotten a call yet and I realize they are probably tight on time, Id need to be sure its OK to pick up on Friday or I wont bid and get in a tangle with the auction company. Regards Pat

I think the auction went pretty well, some bargains for the bargain shoppers and an overall pretty good result for the family as well. I believe we were able to make arrangements for everyone who needed them, I appreciate the responses here. And rest assured, I personally bought lots of crap. Very, very little did not sell, and that I would consider a great goal to achieve.

My haul. Spent the morning polishing up this old toolbox, spent the afternoon unloading my van. Took me 2 days to get it all loaded, the second day I brought my pickup truck and car trailer, and it was pretty much packed (not pictured).
I ended up with 2 right hand exhaust tips for the '65 Starfire, and I would be very interested in a good used LH side if anyone has an extra. I'd be willing to trade an NOS unused RH side tip for a decent used LH side if that would help entice anyone.

Awesome, will do, thanks! Glad you could make it up for the auction. Will get some pics and stuff for you tonight or tomorrow (I'm on grass cutting duty all day today).
