"Check" refers to checking something off a list or in hockey giving someone a check. "Cheque" refers to writing a promissary note as in writing a cheque, if you are using correct English. Just as "center" means in the middle of something whereas "centre" is a place where people gather such as a shopping centre or a sports centre. I suppose I coud say that I'd like to by sumthing for my Oldsmobile, but spelling it like that woud not be rite. Class dismissed.
