Axle removal
Need to swap the differential from the parts car. Reading the manual, it says to remove the axles, but of course you need those special GM tools
Would a harmonic balancer puller do the job? Not 100% sure of the procedure...
Anyone have any tips or tricks? I'm hoping to not have to pull the entire rear end (twice), that sounds like a real pain in the butt.

Hi Justin I replaced mine in the driveway while on stands, the full size rear end is held in by the plate behind the brake shoes, undo the 4 bolts and the bearing and axle will pull out ( I have removed several and they all pulled out without useing a slide hammer ) to remove the bearing from the axle you will need a press. Once you have removed the axles the pumpkin pod will unbolt and comes out as a unit and can be reinstalled into the other rear end, after 63 the rearends in the 64 full size cars are integral and have to be assembled in the banjo housing and require shimming.
I hope this helps

Axle removal
Jag is right, get the right tool, some parts stores will rent them, but most rental yards also have them. Once you remove the 4 nuts holding the bearing/seal retainer bolt the slide hammer to the axle flange bolts and give a few wacks. Usually does not take much although sometimes the race itself can be rusted/corroded in and take a little more. Dave E
Removing the parking brake from the backing plate sucks! Aside from that, all the axles came off super easy, no heavy tools required.
Just pulled the differential off the parts car. 2.87:1 unfortunately
Will have to look around for a posi sometime.
