Steering column filler seal. I’ve never been able to get one on without tearing it. I’ve gotten to the point I just cut it with scissors. Trying to stretch it over the back drive rod arm and it tears it every time. The hole for the column is just to small anyway. I bet I bet it can probably be done if column is apart but who can remember that. What’s your experience or tips?

 

I have installed one but it was 15+ years ago. I know for sure I had the column out of the car as I was restoring everything on the interior side of the firewall. I don't remember cutting it but maybe I did. I certainly don't remember it tearing. Sorry, wish I could be more help!

On my ‘66 big cars there’s a similar metal rubber piece. I definitely had to slip it on the column with the column out of the car.

In those years there was a shift linkage sticking out of the column at roughly 3:00 on the lower end, the trick is to slip the piece over that shift linkage and slip it up the column as a first rebuild step.

If the column is on the car and you don’t want to pull it, then yup, I’ll guess slicing it is the only way to go.

In 68 it was part of the steering column assembly, so it would have already been on the column when it was installed in Lansing (or BOP plants)
