Air Cleaner Vacuum Diaphragm

Has anyone attempted to replace this diaphragm? Is it difficult? Thanks

I replaced both of them on my 1971 442 air cleaner. Pretty easy and if you are careful you can remove and replace the diaphragm with removing the spot welds. One side of the brace can be carefully pried up to get the part out. The hardest thing for me was finding exact replacements. I found Borg Warner brand ones on EB

ay.

Thanks,

Rick

I replaced one with new and one with a used part.

I replaced the one on my '68. You will have to bend the rod to correctly fit your flapper valve, the replacement just has a straight rod.

The vacuum line comes off the snorkel & goes to a thermo valve under the air cleaner. Another line comes off the valve & goes to the brass fitting on the intake behind the carb. They both go in the clip on the bottom of the air cleaner. Did you get the correct '68 442 air cleaner?? The 350 cutlass look similar & will work but they have a much smaller, straighter snorkel. The parts place has the valve & clip if yours are missing, They're the first 2 parts on the page I downloaded.

Yes, correct. I have a ‘Z’ manifold on the right with no heat riser, so that black part on yours would be just for looks on mine.

Compared to the abomination that came with the car, this one is a dream.

I got rid of the scoops, hoses and the housing. Hoses were toast, the scoops were modified in a botched way (painted duct tape?) but under the bumper you couldn’t see it. The filter housing was a long snout on one side with a short, round one on the other. Haven’t seen a similar one with “Ram Rod 400” sticker

I did just the opposite. I restored all the original parts, red 4bbl air cleaner, black fender wells, etc. Then I added the "OAI" package from the parts place. I don't remember if I sent you some pics, since our cars are almost twins, but this is what it looks like now! Oh by the way, it took 2 tries to get a decent air cleaner from the parts place!!! First one had blisters under the paint, looked like ****! had to fight with them to get another one( shipped at my expense!!) The second one had a defective flapper valve on the pass. side. I just said screw it & used it as it was. I have the vac lines on it for looks but I just don't have it hooked up to the intake fitting. I may get around to changing it someday but I really don't want to end up repainting the air cleaner! It looks like the '68-'69 OAI air cleaners are being discontinued!! Pretty much everyone shows them on some kind of back order & the price doubled! They went from $399 to $700!! if you can get one!! That air cleaner on your car looks to be one of the '71 up non-oai stick shift car air cleaners, Did they ruin the snorkel ends trying to hook up the hoses, it might be worth a couple of bucks to someone??? That Ram-Rod 400 decal you have was for '69 only W30s Fusick & others sell them.

Very nice setup. The old air cleaner housing was pretty hacked up, like the other parts of the OAI that was installed. I now have two inner fenders with holes in the front that need to be replaced. Sounds like a good time to rewire as well.
