Hi I am back with another question about how the sound should sound on a 1978 Oldsmobile delta 88.
I want that aggressive low muscle tone or just a nice rumble. Thinking about getting flow master super 10 mufflers some black widows . And dual exhaust just to make sure I get that rumble tone. Any advice thank you.
It's your car, so you should listen to many things and decide. However, an Oldsmobile 98, and, to a lesser extent, the 88, was quiet and dignified. While the owner of such a vehicle would respect the choice of a younger man buying a 442 as at least it's an Oldsmobile, the bigger cars were for stately travel and would have a quiet exhaust.
But, it's 40 some years later, so none of that matters too much. My practical advice is to note that there is too quiet, just right, and too loud. There is also idle, cruise, highway cruise, and wide open throttle. It is ok, and expected, for a car with a big engine to be really loud at wide open throttle, but being loud at idle is a little less accepted, and being loud, especially droning, at cruise is not desirable because there's no escaping it like there is for letting off the gas from wide open. Flowmasters tend to drone. I have some that don't and some that do.
I think the consensus is walker dynomax around here? Some like Spintech, and some like old school glasspacks like Thrush or Cherry Bombs.
Thank you all for the help. I just checked out the Dynomax Superturbo think I’m gonna go w/ those.
i am wanting to go for a sporty look but keep it factory I just got some rally wheels I couldn’t pass especially on the price. And they came w/ tire in good shape.
I'll chime in,
As i have seen in so many post It's you ride do with it what you want and be happy, however some things just seem right for some cars and some things don't, for example My 56 Super 88 is bone stock in appearance all the way down to the wide whites and factory spinner style hub caps, it has dual exhaust with Flowmasters installed by the previous owner, I don't like them and plan to remove them for a close to stock exhaust system, they are not obnoxious but just a little to loud for me at least on this vehicle, if it were a 442 I would probably keep them on.
Check the dates on the tires. They can look good with lots of remaining tread but be too old to be safe. I think you will be happy with the Dynomax Superturbos.

The Dynomax come is several lengths. Longer is typically quieter. I use the 14" versions on all my 442s. I've got the 21" versions on my 67 Delta, and to be honest, it isn't a lot quieter. I find these mufflers have a more pleasant musclecar sound - rumbly without the obnoxious drone. Is it really necessary to **** off your neighbors with (no)Flowmasters? Also, every published muffler flow test puts Flowmasters at the bottom of the list. How they can be overly restrictive while simultaneously being obnoxiously loud is an impressive piece of design work.
I have Hooker Aerochamber mufflers currently. Under my well padded interior 88 Cutlass Supreme Classic Brougham, they were the perfect noise level. Under my 70S, they are loud and droning. They flow among the best for a chambered muffler. I almost went with the Chinese straight throw stainless Flowmaster mufflers to replace the Aerochamber's, Dynomax, I know what I am what I am getting. The large body Dynomax Superturbo muffler was almost stock inside my 2000 Dodge Dakota. Open the window, everyone else got a nice exhaust note, best of both worlds.

And I have almost the same car equipped with Flowmaster 50's and I love them. For me they are quiet at idle noticeable in the mid range but I can converse with a partner with no problem at cruse and rumble coming down with a little pop .I like them but sound is like the blond and redhead thing, different strokes for different folks. If you make your car build and finish the center of attention the noise it makes is very secondary.. Tedd
Ted,
I'm not sure which model Flowmasters I have there may be quieter ones, they are not to bad at cruise but certainly announce
their presence on start up. Trust me with the color of my car it needs no announcement !! There are some other small things I have to address that are on the list before the exhaust but I think they will exchanged for something a little more mellow in the future.
I have a 72 Delta 88 with a 350 and 2bbl, single exhaust.
I'd like to upgrade to a dual exhaust, it's pricey when you have kids in college though.
I also thought about putting a 4bbl carb on it, but it drives SO NICE now I don't want to F with it. And I like the per gallon currently.
That sounds lame, but I'm not planning on racing anyone, so...
I decided to just put a glassapack on it to start with, cheapest route. If it sounded like ***** it's like $30 invested.
WELL, IT SOUNDS GREAT! Very nice idle rumble, little loud when driving but not like a "welded" muffler at all.

True dual exhaust with Flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers. It makes for a deep angry aggressive tone. Sounds great on my 69s 350 although it is somewhat muted by my high flow cats. As far as tint goes I am a big proponent for 35% smoke. Which I also have on my 69. Dark enough to help protect the interior and keep the car slightly cooler in the summer and light enough to see into the car and park at night without having to roll down your windows.
Here she is around midnight this past November. Although the tint appears very dark and restrictive I assure you it isn't.

How much did the high flow cats drop exhaust noise? I almost went this route, to gain an easy O2 port for the 70S for a wideband tuner and hopefully loose a little noise and hopefully the droning at least. I decided Superturbo mufflers was the best route for now as I am not sure I can mount cats as close as I would like due to exhaust routing. I am going to measure that this morning.
