I heard from a friend today that the oil companies are being forced to remove the sulfur from gasoline, don’t know if it’s true or just a rumor

 

This has been an ongoing trend since 2000, sulfur in gas has no real benefit to combustion engines. The benefit is mostly in older diesel engines.

 

As of Jan 01, 2017, sulfur in gasoline was required to be no more than 10 parts per million (down from 30 parts per million).

There have been no changes to sulfur requirements since then.

 

I'm sorta taken back by the thread title "Additives in gasoline" & not sure what is/was meant by additives in gasoline. All crude oil on the planet is derived from living organisms which died millions of years ago. All living organisms on the planet contain sulfur. Maybe you're thinking (instead) - gasoline contaminants? They've been removing sulfur from crude oil since late 1920s early 1930s. Sulfur has never been an 'additive'.

 

If anyone wants the real scoop on dino-juice. I'm not sure, but there has to be a few mixed in?

Unfortunately, the article speaks nothing to sulfur. But that's cool - crude oil is a hydrocarbon - and more. As said, all living organisms contain sulfur. Sulfur exists (in living organisms) in the form of sulf-hydryl (-SH) "thiol" groups. In the greatest majority of plants/animals two -SH (thiol) groups are bonded together to form disulfide bonds. It is the formation of disulfide bonds which impart the physical & functional nature of chemical compounds (e.g. proteins) which supports life.

 

As mentioned, the lower sulfur diesel is harsh on older diesels. Nothing that can't be cured with a little ATF in the fuel tank though.

 

Yeah the Sulphur was cheap lubrication in diesel fuel. Just watching the Motor Oil Geek, Lake Speed Jr. He mentioned European oils are higher in calcium due to making oils for high Sulphur fuel markets. Calcium levels effect the need of ZDDP and other additives. Supposedly despite the ZDDP drop in VR1, thanks to reduced calcium, the new formula is just as good as the old formula. The newest SQ rated oil has even lower Sulphated Ash. For fuel, buy Top Tier fuel, it has meet higher specs vs run of the mill fuels.

Lead and sulfur are lubricants, they are added to many steels in increase machinability and reduce tool wear, and as we all know to reduce wear on valve seats.
